Walls help!

We have moved into a new house and one of the rooms has been painted with paint mixed with sand to give it a rough texture. sad My dad came round and suggested all the walls would need to be replastered, Dh seems to think we could use some kind of special paint that smooths out walls. Has anyone had a similar experience if so what did you do? The walls currently resemble a beach!

I'm with your dad : they'll need skimming. You can buy various treatments that claim to give you a smmoth finish but it's having the skill to applyt hem properly. Bite the bullet and pay a pro.

I think polycell do a smoothing paint, but i really don't think that will cut it and i agree with your dad. I would imagine that the paint would work out £££

Expect to pay circa £100 per wall for plastering

Before you go any further, just check whether the effect is on top of lining paper.

have you tried scraping it? Try in a corner behind the door that won't show much. Don't use a steamer because if the plaster is overheated it will crack and fall off.

Skimming is good value if the walls are sound, but insist on looking at a sample of the plasterer's work because anybody can call themselves one. Gnarled hands are a good sign, and a very old trowel worn thin.

Do any wiring, or work on architraves, skirting, picture rails and windows, first. It is dusty. Buy a canister vac and hide your domestic vac until cleanup is complete.

Thank you so much for all your advice. I will try giving it a scrape. My dad is a plasterer and has done the last 2 houses we renovated for us but i was hoping one of the new fancy smoothing fillers i could do myself would do the job.
