Fireplace/Heating conundrum

We currently have an old gas fire that needs replacing. I would really like a multi fuel stove, the main reason being it would act as a back-up in case the gas goes off. I wouldn't be using it all the time because I'm concerned about particulate pollution.

The problem is that we only have one radiator in the room and it doesn't provide enough heat. So if we went for the stove, we probably still need to pay for another radiator.

I'm also thinking this is going to be a lot of expense for something we're not going to use much. But, if we get a chimney survey done and they say it needs lining even for a new gas fire could that be quite costly anyway?

Or we could just block up the fireplace completely and add another radiator. It just seems a shame to do that when we have a house with a chimney.

Anyone had a similar decision to make or any ideas?
Thanks

Stoves are addictive- we use ours way more than we thought we would! Blocking up a fireplace isn't recommended and I think it would be a great shame.

Why are you worried about getting a stove and having another radiator? Is it cost? Could you buy a bigger radiator to replace the existing one?

The multi fuel stove in my house is the best money I ever spent. There's just something about a real fire. We used to have a gas fire we never used, we use this stove a lot.
