Composite door - cost?

Is £2000 reasonable for a new composite door, supplied and fitted and including all door furniture (love that term!) and VAT? Had a guy out today and it looks like it will be around that figure. Having never bought a new front door I have no idea of what is about right!

Mmmm, depends on the quality. We had a top of the range composite as a front door and it cost about £1,200. The back door was the basic composite option and was about £700. Not sure about the fitting costs as we had all windows and doors done. If I was you, I'd probably get a few quotes.

Thanks! It does seem a lot of money to me. He suggested there might be a bit of discount available (I need to go back to him with choice of door, colour etc) but I can't imagine it will get down much below £2000 all in. Don't mind paying a bit for quality (and the company was recommended by a friend who had a composite door fitted by them recently) but a quick google just now suggests that nearer £1000 is more normal. All the threads etc I found on it were at least a year or two old if not older though.

Who did you use StarSpotter?

We had a new composite door fitted in the summer and it cost us £1000. We used Safestyle (I know but they gave the best quote and the salesman was the least annoying!)

SwedishEdith · 19/10/2015 19:34

Why does he suggest there's a discount available? He might be genuine, but I get alarmed at companies that start offering discounts after their first quote. Why not just give you the straight up price?

Floralnomad · 19/10/2015 19:39

Have a look at Darlaston doors , we have had some UPVC doors from them and they are excellent . They do composite doors from £629 and deliver nationwide ( usually free delivery) and then you can get someone to fit it , my DH does all our DIY so he has done all ours and it's not that difficult .

CakeSlayer · 19/10/2015 19:42

Too much!
My door is exquisite
It's a black composite door with a all trimmings and a custom sand blasted glass top bit, had a small window fitted to match and it all came in at £1000

Th door before was so ancient and drafts that everything in the house would shake on a windy night and the front door opens into the lounge

It was the best investment in this house. I'd pay that again no problem!

Forestdreams · 19/10/2015 19:49

Sounds a lot. Ours didn't leave much change from £1000. It was a couple of years ago but £2000 sounds way too much.

ArtyBat · 19/10/2015 19:53

I agree with PP's - £2000 is too much. I had one fitted with it's own door frame, for £1000. They made the letter box slightly larger (at my request), added lead into the windows, and basically, nothing was too much trouble.

insanelycheerful · 19/10/2015 20:32

Swedish he said because we had been introduced by a friend that they could offer a discount as a gesture for this. He didn't say how much though.

Do you still get the guarantees if you get it supplied then get someone else to fit it, floralnomad? We definitely couldn't fit it ourselves!

insanelycheerful · 19/10/2015 20:34

CakeSlayer who did you use please? Our current door sounds like your old one!

Forestdreams and Artybat who did you use please?

What kind of composite door? We've just had a rockdoor put in, with the highest rating for security and highest for insulation whatsits. Cost us £2k for that (final costs much higher as we had windows done too). The company we used only supply rockdoor for their quality.

ArtyBat · 19/10/2015 20:44

Op, I used Greenwich Windows and conservatories in Normanton, West Yorkshire. It is a small firm, but they were spot on for me.

I haven't lived there for several years, but I pass my old house occasionally, and the door looks as good now as it did then.

SonceyD0g · 19/10/2015 20:49

Mine is a four panel 2 square, in black
fitted with all furniture including knocker was £1000
Put in 5 years ago still looks as good as the day it went in

SonceyD0g · 19/10/2015 20:50

It also has side panels with toughened glass for that price

Floralnomad · 19/10/2015 21:00

I actually have no idea but it may be worth giving them a ring and finding out ,I would imagine that the actual product has a guarantee . Their UPVC stuff is excellent quality and the customer service is brilliant .

WhispersOfWickedness · 19/10/2015 21:28

That does sound like a lot, we had 9 new windows and a composite door for about £3000! From what I can remember, the door part of that was about £1000.

Forestdreams · 19/10/2015 22:04

Ideal window solutions.

But you need 3 quotes from companies local to you. This is too much like double glazing to even think of going ahead on the first quote you get.

StarSpotter · 19/10/2015 22:33

Mine was a firm in Greater Manchester. £2,000 seems a lot for one door to me.

skippy67 · 20/10/2015 08:33

We had a Rockdoor installed 18 months ago for £1100. Looks fab, and feels safe and solid.

insanelycheerful · 20/10/2015 12:17

Thanks all for replies and info! It does seem very high compared to most of these. Agree re getting other quotes and wouldn't have gone ahead without at least one other. I do like to go on a recommendation though as you hear too many stories of botch jobs and poor workmanship. As I am far from an expert on these things, I know I could easily be taken for a ride! And would be happy to pay a bit more for a quality job that lasts (but not this much more!!)

Where are you based Insanely?

I'm waiting for my new composite doors to be fitted at the moment.

2 x composite doors, New frame and glass arch above the front door and a replacement unit for a window which happens to have failed all for under £2k.

As ForestDreams says, this is just like double glazing and I would be very wary of big national companies.

insanelycheerful · 20/10/2015 21:26

I'm in bucks. The company is a local one, seems to have v good reputation, also a member of a council run reputable tradesmen initiative where they are inspected annually etc. Ticks all the boxes in terms of quality and so on, but just seem way too pricey. Anyway now that I've got DH a bit more involved in discussions he appears to prefer wooden doors anyway!! Hmm So a bit more research and thinking to be done.....
