To Bathe or Not to Bathe

That is the question

We are looking in to having a new bathroom and have one quote so far.

DH and I disagree on the new fit as I would happily just have a huge shower as none of us have baths. The cat would however miss the bath as she likes to drink water pooling in the bottom Hmm.

We have a three bed family home so he is worried that it would put people off with small dc as we remember when our dc were small how they liked splashing about in the bath. I do have issues with my back which will get worse as I age so like the idea of just walking in to a shower.

All opinions welcome.

To bathe

PosterEh · 14/10/2015 17:54

Family home needs a bath IMO. Depends how long you plan to live there though. Long term and it might be worth just suiting yourselves as new owners will want an updated bathroom anyway.

Karcheer · 14/10/2015 18:07

Definitely need a bath in the main family bathroom.

McBaby · 14/10/2015 18:16

Bath is essential in a family home but if you plan to live there a long time get a shower you can always put a bath back in if you decide to sell.

Troubletutmill · 14/10/2015 18:40

I think a chat about when we want to move is very valid, the current plan is to perhaps move in about four years.

Thanks for feedback, I suppose the cat remains happy as well.

The cat can drink from the shower tray or the sink (that's what ours does).

If you have back problems and plan to be there long term, sod the resale value - get what you need.

PosterEh · 14/10/2015 19:27

I think if you're only going to be they four years then keep the bath.

museumum · 14/10/2015 19:39

Four years? Definitely keep a bath. We have a 2yr old and bought this year. Houses that would need us to put in a bath were less appealing without doubt.

dotdotdotmustdash · 15/10/2015 09:45

I would mentally chop a fair amount off the value of a house if I viewed it without a bath on the premise that I would have to refit the bathroom.

LadyLuck81 · 15/10/2015 09:54

If you want to move in that sort of time out a bath in. I'd expect a hefty discount on a house if it didn't have a bath as it would be a right ball ache and is news I do the bathroom immediately. If it's a family home it needs a bath IMO

HeadDreamer · 15/10/2015 09:57

If you are moving within 4 years, then yes you should have a bath.

I think we are in the minority. (People who only showers).

LittleBearPad · 15/10/2015 10:00

Four years. Keep the bath.

magimedi · 15/10/2015 10:23

Keep the bath. We tried selling a 4 bed house with just a shower & ended up putting a bath back in to sell it. There was obviously lots of room for any prospective purchaser to put a bath in, but it totally fazed & put off a lot of viewers.

PoppyBlossom · 15/10/2015 10:28

A home needs a bath.

mandy214 · 15/10/2015 11:23

Yes, family home needs a bath.

myotherusernameisbetter · 15/10/2015 11:28

We only shower too but when we redid the bathrooms a couple of years ago we decided to keep the bath in the main bathroom purely for re-sale - we do however have a shower cubicle in the en-suite so have a walk-in option.

RaphaellaTheSpanishWaterDog · 15/10/2015 11:45

Family home needs a bath imho.

Otoh, my then elderly parents installed a large walk in shower in their (tiny) bathroom a few years back. Sadly fast forward about seven years and they both needed to go into a nursing home. We sold the house - which was in an area very popular with young families looking to move up the ladder - to a young couple planning to have DC. None of the people that viewed mentioned being put off by the lack of bath and we had three good offers within a short time frame.

I wouldn't be put off buying a house with no bath as long as there was space to retro fit one.

Nonnainglese · 15/10/2015 11:49

I hate showers so biased big time.
A friend of ours has removed her bath and now regretting it as bathing DGSs not easy and she misses having a soak in a bubble bath.
I wouldn't buy a house without a bath.

museumum · 15/10/2015 11:59

When house hunting a crapy old bathroom that all needs done is ok.
But a bearufyl shiny new bathroom that is not suitable (eg no bath) is really annoying as it seems such a waste to pull it all out and it's usually very difficult to just add a bath without redoing most of the tiling etc.

maggiso · 15/10/2015 12:21

Agree keep the bath if you plan to move soonish. A house hunting family member with small children was put off an otherwise reasonable house with no bath.
Can you somehow fit in both - or a proper shower bath?

yomellamoHelly · 16/10/2015 17:19

Needs a bath if you're planning to move soonish.

jevoudrais · 16/10/2015 17:25

I would be put off with no bath. Dogs + kids = life much easier with a bath.
