Help I've made a big mistake...

DH and I were hiusehuntjng for a long time and eventually bought our house in May of this year. The house itself is perfect...the location not so much. It's a longer commute than our old (rented) house - this adds approx 30 mins to the commute each way (total commute of 1hr each way). Also it's in a semi rural location which I'm realising is not my cup of tea as much as our old suburban location where I could walk to the shops, park etc.

it's in a development so not too isolated and the neighbours are lovely.

I passed by our old rented house today and got a wave of homesickness. All I can think about is how do we can sell up and how stupid we have been to compromise on such a key issue - location - but with such an unbelievably low housing stock and an expanding family, we had to buy fairly urgently. It's preventing me from appreciating the many benefits of our lovely new house which is much bigger than we'd have been able to afford in our old suburb.

Does anyone have any advice on how long one normally has to hold on to a property for in order for it not to have been a financial disaster - or even better - any experiences of getting used to a semi rural location and long commute?

How are you commuting - car, bus, train etc? you need to make the most of that time, download podcasts to listen to, read if you're on pulbic transport etc.

You have a nice house and good neighbours, these are positives. It is your own home and not a rental, that is also a positive. You have internet access so Mr Tesco can come to you rather than you walking to theshops - this will save you money as you're less likely to impulse buy.
