Bathroom paint disaster :(

So despite at least 4 coats of dulux soft sheen bathroom+ paint the walls and ceiling still look patchy SadAngry

Do I just need to accept that because of the sheen it's going to look a bit crap?

Will sanding and trying to apply with a roller make any difference?

Have you used a brush so far and were you using a light colour over a deal one? Did you stir the paint before you used it (if the instructions on the tin said to do so)?

I have found that using a roller uses less paint and gives better coverage overall, plus you don't get brush marks.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 11/10/2015 17:14

Is it fully dry?

cuntycowfacemonkey · 11/10/2015 17:19

I would always use a roller rather than a brush. I also paint everywhere with a coat of white before painting with a new colour. How dark was the colour you were painting over?

RandomMess · 11/10/2015 17:20

Yes thoroughly stirred
Yes to brush only
Yes fully dry
Covered a pale colour but the ceiling was already white

What kind of roller do you think would be best?

PS. Can I cry????

Are your walls (not the paint) damp?

RandomMess · 11/10/2015 17:27

Nope, it's not been used as bathroom/shower room for about 6 months only as a toilet so nice and dry, well ventilated and warm.

It's not truly awful but it's far from great.

Do you think a fine sand down and rollering on another coat (or 2) will help? Should I sand between the last couple of coats?

hmm lots of unhappy reviews about this paint here, might be worth a read before you decide what to do

I haven't actually seen a bathroom paint WITH a decent review, let alone one I may be able to buy locally!!!!

What can I use other than bathroom paint?

OP posts:
cuntycowfacemonkey · 11/10/2015 17:34

seems to me it's quite thick so if you brush over an area you have already done it goes on quite thick or drags hence a patchy finish

cuntycowfacemonkey · 11/10/2015 17:35

Tbh I've never used bathroom paint just regular emulsion in the bathroom

RandomMess · 11/10/2015 17:37

Do you reckon I can use regular emulsion straight over the bathroom stuff?

OP posts:
InternationalEspionage · 11/10/2015 17:37

IMHO, you might have best luck using plain matte white on ceiling to disguise any bumps or glitches... I have use standard ( not antimicrobial) in a bathroom with good ventilation no probs.

3 coats with a good latex roller and you'll be fine. 1 extra cost of your existing sheen on walls with latex roller should improve your finish but you will need to re-edge that first too.

Any kind of sheen is best with a roller...brushes just for edging before filling in. Good luck!

InternationalEspionage · 11/10/2015 17:41

Yes you can use regular in theory...It's just an anti microbial additive in bathroom paint, no?

Whether you want to is another matter. How bumpy patch and bad is it? Your mention of sanding sounds ominous Confused. Could you bear to share a pic?

cuntycowfacemonkey · 11/10/2015 17:43

Well if it's bumpy I would give it a good sanding first and then a coat of white and start again with a non bathroom emulsion

BinkyandFlip · 11/10/2015 17:49

Interesting, I keep having trouble with dulux paint, not the bathroom sort but just the matt. It keeps drying really patchy like where you have overlapped slightly or something, stays darker than the rest.

I overpainted several times, dry clean brushes, new paint, it's still doing it.

I wonder now if it isn't me but the paint. I'm going mad with it.

RandomMess · 11/10/2015 17:49

Well I think you are telling me what I thought, you can see the brush strokes even where it's more like 5 coats and I've been really light handed/careful.

I will go sand it down now, I don't have a latex roller and I don't think B&Q sell them???? What is 2nd best - sponge or just very short pile?

At least the bathroom stuff has given it a good undercoat

OP posts:
RandomMess · 11/10/2015 17:50

OMG don't say that the I have 2 huge tins of white dulux emulsion

running off to sand...

OP posts:
wowfudge · 11/10/2015 18:03

I haven't had any issues with Dulux paint. Just get an emulsion roller. I don't think you need to sand unless you have a lumpy wall which the sheen of the paint is emphasising.

I've used trade matt emulsion on our bathroom ceiling.

Daffodilliesandaisies · 11/10/2015 18:21

My Dp is a decorator and he never uses special kitchen or bathroom paint just normal emulsion. He said if you sand it you can paint over it with emulsion but it will probably take a couple of coats.
