So gutting a period house. Getting new timber Alu clad. At the front we wanted white to fit in with street scene (mix sashes, fake sashes). Back is ultra modern bifolds, glass wall. We thought grey would work better there. Builder looked at me like I was mad at "spending all that money on windows and having them different at the back."

Thoughts - need to order the feckers.

We were told grey would look better by company we got the bifolds off. Apparently it's quite common for people to have bifolds in a different finish to the rest of the house. So many people go for grey that it's now the same price as white. (That said we went for white and they look fab.)

If your house has rooms which are dual aspect I think you need them to tie in. If not then it doesn't really matter.

We're currently having a similar dilemma, not helped by the fact that the living room is triple aspect and we can't afford to replace the windows at the back.

They are all the same inside (white). House white at back. Sandstone at front.

One room runs full length of house but should be same inside

I have a feeling that grey is currently fashionable.

So it will soon go the way of artex, stone cladding, shagpile carpet, and laminate flooring.

I like grey more than white. But I went to a new building the other day with midnight blue frames which looked lovely too. Hard to imagine anything as bad as stone cladding but still take pigletjohn's point about fashionable becoming unfashionable.

munchkinmaster · 10/10/2015 07:34

I completely agree with piglet john about fashion. I think though, my whole design (bifolds, glass wall, zinc roof) is likely to date - so in for a penny.

munchkin was the zinc roof expensive? We are having a verandah put onto the front of our house and I'm considering a metal roof for that.

munchkinmaster · 11/10/2015 20:25

Eye wateringly expensive. I have tried to get an alternative but nothing else really worked.

And as piglet john pointed out it will date!

I think grey window frames will definitely date. I don't actually think zinc roofing will date. Its very commonly used in the US, particularly for porches. Its quite a classic look for the US style of house (which is what we're going for). Pity the cost is so high to start with!

As long as you don't do what a house near me did, a particularly revolting shade of light brown. I shudder every time I drive past.
