Has anyone ever hung a very wide roller blind?

I'm looking at hanging a roller blind in a recess that is 240cm wide. Has anyone done this already - does it hold? It seems very massive and I dont want it to collapse out already replacing a collapsed mess roman blind

Any other tips?

Thanks

Yes, in double patio doors. They've been up 2 months with no problems Smile

Oh fab thanks! Is there a bit in the middle or do the side brackets do the job?

I don't know how you can have a supporting bit in the middle without interfering with the functionality. Unless you have a split blind.

Maybe your plastering and mortar isn't well done poocatcher? Have you damp?

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 06/10/2015 10:13

No, all one piece. The internal pole is strong enough (plastic IIRC).

This doesn't answer your question, but one seen a very wide window with 3 blinds. The middle one was fitted with a baton in front of the two at the back. I loved the look, and they said it was very cheap compared to the single wide one, and they liked the flexibility of having blinds down at different heights for day time

We have a 'fancy' duplex roller blind at the double patio doors(see) and the fixings go into the plaster - there are 4 I think. Blind then clips into them. I love it and it is very stable.

Rats - photo fail.

We have a 2.3m blind at kitchen window. It's been up for 5 years now and is fantastic. There is no support needed in middle. My mum has a 2m blind, up for a year and again no problem. Both bought on-line, very reasonably priced and good quality.

Here it is - sorry about the angle, didn't want to show the mound of washing up below Grin

Excellent - thanks very much. The combo of blinds is interesting but I dont think it will work in this window we have.

I was looking at blinds2go unless anyone recommennds another online shop?

Thanks!

You need to make sure the wall plugs and screws are into the brick behind the plaster. Use longer screws for something large and/or heavy. It's not so much the weight as the fact that you are pulling on something like a blind to open and close it so it needs to be securely fixed to the wall.

Bearbehind · 06/10/2015 10:38

I can't help this roller blinds but I've bought blinds from blinds2go and was very impressed.

If it's too big a span for the style then you won't be able to buy them from them, ie if they are willing to supply the size you need, I'd be pretty certain they'll be fine.

PigletJohn · 06/10/2015 10:55

if you get a wide one, be sure to get the sort that are rolled up and down with a plastic chain at the side, not by tugging at the middle of the blind. I have a big one like that and it tore.

cressetmama · 06/10/2015 14:06

Most of our windows are very wide (9 ft 6) and we have blinds in most places. None has been a problem although, lacking DIY skills or four arms, I have tended to get a handyman to put them up. I also have one very heavy wooden Venetian blind which has two sets of pull-up cords in addition to a tilt control. None has budged an inch.

LittleRed28 · 06/10/2015 15:18

Did anyone manage to find a wide blind in a high street shop or did you have to order online? I've bought a house with a 2.5m wide window and I'm struggling to find a blind for it.

FriedSprout · 06/10/2015 16:03

I looked, but couldn't find them on the night street anywhere. Think I used blinds2go too. You can chose which end to have the pull, put in the exact dimensions and there was quite a wide range of fabric. It was easy to do on-line and I would do it again.

knittingbat · 07/10/2015 11:15

we have one left by previous owners, obviously ancient and sprung so no chain, still working perfectly even though toddler bashes it daily!

cressetmama · 09/10/2015 14:05

It's not something I found on the High Street. Believe me, I looked, but they all had to be custom-made.

Graciescotland · 09/10/2015 14:26

I have a couple of wide ones fro blinds2go the one with the plastic chain pops open alot (I think it's the weight as smaller one doesn't have the same problem) the metal chain is much sturdier. Depends on whether you have v. small children though.
