Repointing front of 1930s house

Hi, we need to do something with the pointing on the front of our 1930s house. When our next door neighbours pressure washed the front of their house some of our pointing (which I'm assuming was already loose) was dislodged. Subsequently the plaster in our front bedroom has blown.

So we are looking to repoint either part or all of the brickwork on one side of our house (the other side is part render, part garage conversion so appears fine). The first quote I got was for £500, and came from the guy who repointed our neighbours property. The second quote was £2300 and what seemed professional and reputable company. Of note they mentioned how bad the pointing was next door.

Any advise would be greatfully received. Thank you for reading.

We had ours done last year, it is a solid wall construction and they rake out twice the diameter, so around 20mm for us and re pointed in a similar colour, we are terraced so it was only the front and they used an angle grinder to remove the old mortar which makes a lot of dust so keep windows shut !! (next door also came round to moan about the dust on their path) the angle grinder is quicker than hammer and chisel but they have to be careful not to damage the brick, cost wise it worked out at £100 for about 6 square meters and took half a day so per hour is about right, your top price seem to be high assuming you havent got a massive mansion ! I would be looking for a 3dr quote , just noticed that you may be in Surrey so that may hike the price !

£2300 is excessive for one side.

It should be whizzed out with a grinding blade, and re-pointed using a mortar gun, rubbed smooth, which does a much better job than the old manual trowel. It should look perfect. It is not a very skilled job, but tedious. It would be quicker off scaffolding, but a tower will do.

It makes vast amounts of gritty dust so move your car half a mile away and warn the neighbours.

p.s.

my neighbour did it himself. It looks like he used a teaspoon.

Thanks for the replies. I don't want to overpay, but at the same time we want a good finish! I think we need a couple more estimates.

ask if you can go and look at a house they have recently done (speak to the homeowner as well)
