What's the shortest time you've lived in a (mortgaged) house before moving?

We've been in our current house for a little over 3 years and, for a variety of reasons, would like to move.

I know it's quite a short amount of time to have lived in a house but people seem really surprised at us wanting to move.

It's surely not that crazy or unusual is it?

We moved after 5yrs, 3yrs and been here 5yrs, my feet have stopped itching for now.......

One year. When we were first married, bought a victorian semi, did it up, moved and made money!

lalalonglegs · 29/09/2015 17:26

9 months. It was 1999, I thought the market had peaked... Blush

sparechange · 29/09/2015 17:27

A year. I then had to rent it out for another year until the fix was up on my mortgage and then sold up.
It was my ill-fated move to the countryside. I hated it straight away.

3 months..... We moved in and realised we hated it (it was a new build town house terrace with mega thin walls) so we put a tenant in and bought somewhere else almost straight away. This was back in the day when mortgages were quite easy to get and property prices were rising but not astronomical yet though. Couldn't do that now!

A wise old relative told me the way to make a fortune was to move every 3 years!

We did at first, bought 2001, sold and bought again in 2004, then sold beginning of 2008. Bought again in 2010 (2 rental houses in between) and we've been here for 5 years now. This is the longest we've ever been in a house and actually not planning to move at the moment!

sparechange · 29/09/2015 17:35

Mandy, that depends on your stamp duty bill!

Tiggeryoubastard · 29/09/2015 17:36

Just under two years. I got married and moved away, let the house out. Nearly 30 years later I still own it and have only had 4 sets of tenants. It's a small terrace, cheap area but a lively little community. I still know most of the neighbours but its not a city I'll ever live in again.

Tiggeryoubastard · 29/09/2015 17:36

Lovely little community. But yes, also lively.

ClareDeLune · 29/09/2015 17:44

10 months! Didn't settle in the area and the house was up for sale after 6 months.

inmyshoos · 29/09/2015 18:25

We moved into our last house October 21st 2006 and moved out Dec 2007. So just over 1 year. Made 16k too!!

AlisonWunderland · 29/09/2015 18:43

15 months.
Knew we were moving after 9.

Never even got my curtains shortened to the right length!

Roseandbee · 29/09/2015 18:58

So far we did just over a year in our first house, 3 in our second one which we had to keep as a rental as couldn't sell it, 4 years in this one as I'm hopefully moving on Friday. As a child I was moving roughly every two years. I worry I will never settle

CityDweller · 29/09/2015 20:39

15 months (put it on market 13 months after moving in). Hated it from day 2. Made money on it, but still would have been the right decision even if we hadn't

meadowquark · 29/09/2015 21:16

In my first house I stayed for 5.5 years, but started seriously itching after about 3 years.
Have been in my second one for 6 months tomorrow (he he) and would be happy to sell and move to my old area if it wasn;t for secondary schools (3 years until admissions still Sad ).
I would not hesitate to move even after 6 months if I felt it is wrong for variety of reasons. Provided that I can afford it, of course!

PettsWoodParadise · 29/09/2015 22:37

First house 18 months (after having lived in the same parental home for 25 years!) - it was a do-er upper and as soon as it was all done I had to move on. Second house just under three years, now in same, third house over ten years. When I did move in the past stamp duty wasn't such a hindrance, now we could do a very very nice loft conversion and have change left over for the cost of stamp duty should we ever move again, so most likely next move will be downsizing when we are in our dotage!

Paddypaws3 · 30/09/2015 10:41

Thanks, I didn't think we were being that outrageous!
