Help me find a narrow dining table

Hi

We need a narrow dining table to fit into our new kitchen extension.

Ideally it would be 65-70 cm wide/140 long and have some sort of central pillar as we will be sitting on built-in benches in an L shape. If the legs were in the normal position on the corners it would make it difficult to get in and out and stop me pushing it in when not in use.

I'd love it to be in a dark wood - walnut or oak style without costing £££ while looking fab. Is such a thing possible?

I think it will be very difficult to buy one with those dimensions and a central pedastal - I don't think it would be very stable. Central pedastal tables tend to be round rather than rectangular, a rectangular one would tip over. However, you can buy "underframes" at Ikea so you could find one that would suit your needs and have a table top made by a carpenter/joiner to put on top. www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/categories/departments/dining/30573/ The Billsta might do the job.

With such specific requirements it'd be worth asking a few local joiners for quotes, I think. Or you might be able to find a nice table top and have a pedestal made for it.

What's your budget? Shall have a rummage, just in case.

lifesalongsong · 27/09/2015 20:43

I agree with Lettuce, you should be able to find someone to make e one cheaper and more easily than trying to find something in a shop.

It can sound a bit daunting but it isn't, go and have a chat with a local joiner

RandomMess · 27/09/2015 20:45

There is a style of table that has one leg that runs down the centre - can't think of the name but will go have a look!

HarlettOScara · 27/09/2015 20:49

My friend has one like this to suit a similar L-shaped bench seating configuration. Her table isn't so narrow but was made to measure with 2 pillar style legs (one towards each end of the rectangular table...like 2 pedestals) and the top is the same material as her kitchen worktops. Seems a fairly simple thing for any carpenter to put together.

We had a similar problem. The only one I could find was this

narrow table

It's slightly more narrow and a bit longer than you want 60x150 cm.

We had one temporarily before we did our extension. It was a good little table and absolutely did the job, but it wasn't very beautiful. If we wanted it permanently then I'd probably have got some quotes from local joiners as others have suggested.

Rumgy · 27/09/2015 20:54

We had one made to order as we needed a narrow one from a local furniture shop. It was very inexpensive to do this.

RandomMess · 27/09/2015 20:54

This is probably too wide

I feel your pain.

I could find the right style in the wrong size and vice versa.

In the end I contacted a local carpenter who made me a walnut table in the dimensions I wanted.

Surprisingly it wasn't that much more expensive than others I'd looked at.

I'd definitely get a quote from a local carpenter especially if you want quite a simple design like I did.

Mercedes · 27/09/2015 21:59

Ooh Lots of suggestions. I love the jenson table RandomMess but it is too wide which is such a shame.

We went for a pedestal as no legs would get in the way - but if the legs were set back or pillar style as people suggested that may work. Also, most pedestals are fussy and we want it sleeker.

Budget - don't know. If it was lovely we could be seduced away from my normal sensible head

I think they are refectory tables, the ones with the long central bit along the middle. I need one for our bench seating but much smaller, only 1m or so. I saw one just as you describe on ebay a couple of weeks ago, refurb but a nice medium oak colour, just a bit long for me.

How about ebay for an ex pub table? They tend to be quite narrow, come in refectory style and are often dark wood.

Flomple · 28/09/2015 14:40

Here's the one I saw, but it's a bit short and may not be fab enough!

Thank you so much Flomple the name of them has been bugging me!!!

There are some gorgeous ones on ebay, probably just as easy to get one made to the size that you want tbh.

OnePlanOnHouzz · 29/09/2015 22:53

Bavarian beer table would be the right width - can get them in various lengths too !! ( with matching bench seats !)

mrodent · 01/06/2017 18:32

This is driving me a bit bonkers... I live in London in a reasonably sized flat. But if I want to have a table in my kitchen and potentially have people sitting on both sides of it it's got to be no more than 70 cm wide... ideally 65 cm, even 60 cm.

What's going on: no manufacturers anywhere appear to be making tables like this. EXTREME IRRITATION!!!!

MissDuke · 01/06/2017 20:58

A bit too wide but would something like this work? The legs under the extending bit swing round so I don't know if that would help you to access the seating. We recently bought this and are very pleased with it.

We had one made by Konk! Honestly it's beautiful and I don't think too pricey either

Baxdream · 12/11/2018 17:29

I've just checked- ours cost £970 for a solid wood 175cm round table

LoftyLou · 12/11/2018 20:31

It’s funny, I have exactly the same dimensions wish list. We currently have a table too big for the space and I have been trawling the internet periodically for ages.

This one is 70cm x 150cm.

How about two square tables, 70cm x 70cm each with a pedestal. If you got one where the table top tips up to be vertical you could store it elsewhere if you have less guests.
