Gas safety inspection failed on new house

We bought our first home a month ago and it was said to have had a gas safety inspection in July and passed.

We have a real old back boiler which is located in the chimney breast. Not idea but not a problem apparently.

Had a gas safety inspection yesterday from someone on behalf of npower, he wasn't even going to do one as the certificate was in date but my OH said you may as well. So he did and said the boiler was classed as dangerous, something about the gap in the chimney breast where it's located and the vent outside to the living room isn't correct. So he turned our whole gas off!

My dad is ironically a gas man and came straight round and had a look, he offered to look when we moved in but seen the certificate in date and we said nit to bother for that reason. Dad turned gas back on but boiler off so that we could use our cooker.

We've just had new flooring out down in living room and was going to wallpaper tge weekend and now it's delayed again, we now have to get the boiler removed Tuesday so that we constriction the awful mdf they put up over the chimney breast and plaster board it and get that plastered if course.

My question is what type of fireplace would you put in?

I like the idea of boxing it in and having an electric stove that looks like a log burner inside personally but that's just cause I seen one in a lodge we went to and loved it and it was surprisingly hot and heated the whole place really well!

Any other ideas? Ive never had a house or decorated before and I know the fireplace is the centerpiece of the living room really! TIA

Get a second opinion!

We used to get told regularly a boiler was unsafe by British Case as the chimney was 3cm to close the conservatory.

We then pointed out each time that British Gas themselves installed it there next to the conservatory and it mysteriously became safe again.

They used to condemn our fire regularly too without testing it because it was Gplan and they didn't know how to get to the flue.

Once they sent someone who could actually test it, it always passed

In Scotland you'd theoretically be able to put a claim into sellers if there was a fault in gas within 28 days.

In practice it can be hard to enforce

I don't really mind paying for the boiler to be done. I have to pay only for the boiler and my dad will do all the work for free. So that isn't the issue. I wouldn't like to go back to the sellers as my solicitor was shite and I don't want to pay her another penny.

I just want opinions on the fire place and what to do with that :-)

gas man opinions do seem to vary, although they shouldn't to the point of 'unsafe'. Was the first guy actually gas safe registered? Have you checked? Was the npower man registered?
