Chandeliers

Reposting here as there is a lot more traffic than house decoration

Am I being mad in hoping for some nice Chandeliers for under £500 each?
I don't want huge ones but I'm buying an old house with very high ceilings and I think my silly dwell type pendant lights will look ridiculous in the big open hall and downstairs dining rooms.

Especially for the hall I'd like something with a bit of wow but without raiding my furniture budget too much. I'm probably keener on modern or retro styling rather than traditional crystal look and I'd happily consider plastics/metal/wood and colour

Any ideas?

I will be watching with interest as we are having the same discussion at home. Just had a vaulted ceiling built and want something to hang from the apex without looking tiny and insignificant!

VulcanWoman · 23/09/2015 08:57

Ikea have a modern one for £85 (Stockholm).

Sotonwhere · 23/09/2015 09:19

That one is lovely vulcan and exactly the sort of thing I've got in my current flat but I think I need something a bit bigger for the new house. I'll try and find a pic of the hall for context. I viewed it once so don't really remember what it's like! I've just started thinking about chandeliers after the EA phone up full of apologies that the seller has decided to take the chandeliers with him. I always assume people will take their lights so don't really register what is there.

If you would prefer something in a traditional style there is quite a good selection of vintage/antique chandeliers on ebay, I've bought one from there previously and it was cheap and perfect for my dd's bedroom. Also a lot of bigger antique places do chandeliers if you wanted to have a look before you buy something, don't know where you are but Sunbury Antiques Fair at Kempton Market it great, next one is 29th September.

Alternatively if you do fancy something more modern then BHS is a good place to look, they have a good selection and definitely under your budget Smile

I got this for our very large living room with a high ceiling(3.2m) www.smartylamps.co.uk/astrid-lampshade-extra-large.html
it's beautiful and takes energy efficient bulbs and hides them nicely.
We have a giant 1m dia. Chinese paper latern in the dining room above the table which looks amazing too... We picked it up from Habitat years ago and in any other size room would look ridiculous but it works well in a huge dining room.
We then have this www.vita.dk/products/conia in the hallway
I'm not a fan of fussy stuff so this suited me better.

I really like the vita one wonky - I've seen it in copper too which I think loOKs gorgeous. I might investigate what sizes it comes in

Here it is in our hall, it's not huge but sits nicely

Lovely hall. I think I would be more inclined to go for an Art Deco type fitting.

VulcanWoman · 23/09/2015 12:55

I meant for your hall OP.
Wonky, very nice.

PigletJohn · 23/09/2015 13:06

BTW they look best in the centre of the ceiling, but in a full height hall it can be very difficult to clean them and change bulbs.

Modern LED lamps will probably have a very long life, but attractive small ones by a good maker like Osram are still uncommon and expensive.

I used to work in a hotel where the chandelier crystals were cleaned about once a year by nightworkers using soft soap and pruners' stepladders.

You need to hang them off a chandelier hook which is screwed into the joist above, or in some cases a bearer which spans two or more joists, especially if you plan to swing on it.

A classic. :D

CheeseBadger · 23/09/2015 13:15

I found a huge beautiful art-deco glass chandelier for less than £200 from an architectural salvage place a few years ago. Might be worth a look at that sort of place.

YellowTulips · 23/09/2015 13:21

Laura Ashley have some nice ones and perhaps surprisingly BHS have a really good lighting section online as someone up thread noted.

Sotonwhere · 23/09/2015 13:43

Thanks for all the suggestions. I do like art deco styling so might look into that more. And I do love the bhs cafe so any excuse to visit Grin

I will share that clip with DP tonight and I'm sure he'll take careful notes on exactly how to terrify me he's about to do it all wrong!

Not in your budget at all but I'd love a Roast chandelier if I had high ceilings (I don't, quite the opposite). I think if you look around you can find some cheaper versions along the same lines though www.roastdesigns.co.uk/concept/

Caprinihahahaha · 23/09/2015 15:58

I've got about four and whilst three were about £200 and one was much more, they all look the same.
Try independent lighting shops. They are often very good and will stock more than they have on display.

They are a bastard to clean though. My hall is very high and it rarely gets properly cleaned

Caprinihahahaha · 23/09/2015 16:00

Laura Ashley's delivery and customer service is shocking. I'd never use them again .

Joh Lewis have a good selection on line. Heals are good too - more quirky items. I have their feather lights in my upstairs hallway.

wonkylegs · 23/09/2015 16:05

I love this one clay light boomerang but again a bit expensive

Sotonwhere · 24/09/2015 13:17

I've seen things like the roast one but with some colour too and they look fantastic, all about the budget. We're moving from a 2 bed flat to a big house so need to buy absolutely loads of furniture! Lights are way down the priority list unfortunately. But I will keep searching.
The clay boomerang is brilliant. That's the sort of odd wow factor that would look ave in the hall. So many --out of budget-' choices...

I bought an Eastern European one a few years ago after searching on eBay. It us lovely and has been in a conservatory but now in my bedroom. I think it cost less than £120.00 and is real glass.

BoutrosBoutros · 27/09/2015 18:59
