Creative bedside table solutions for small space

We have a reasonable sized bedroom but because the space is pretty fixed because of doors, windows and lots of built in wardrobe space we really struggle to get bedside tables in with our kingsize bed. There is 15cm on dh side and 25cm on my side. We could move the bed to make 20 and 20 but couldn't move anymore as the wardrobe doors open next to my bed (which is why the bed is further away from my side) and the door into the bedroom is on dh side.

We've thought of a shelf above the bed but because of the height of our headboard it wouldn't be very practical - open to suggestions though! We've just bought a new bed so changing that isn't an option (we did look into bed with storage headboards but after 3/4 years couldn't find something we both liked)

The tables need to take a light (could be a clip on light which we use attached to the bed at the moment), kindle, phone and drink (currently these go on the floor).

Help!

(cross posted to home decoration as don't know which boards get more traffic)

Wall lights and a small shelf or if you have a bed frame slide a small basket under the bed for bits and pieces.

I agree with Wowfudge

What about something like this painted ?

You could put two each side , one below the other , lamp / drink on top one , kindle / phone underneath.

phones should not be in bedrooms. Kindles are ok because they emit white light. Neither should be next to a drink!

small shelf for light and drink. Kindle tucks under bed so it can't be trodden on, and won't be hit if drink gets spilt.

this vertical? I looked up short CD tower.

Get an oak beam?

Though I think shelves either side would be a good idea.

Do you have to have a bedside table on each side? We only have tables on one side in both our double bedrooms - I've never seen the need for two.

Some great ideas, thanks!

That oak beam looks fab. Top of my list at the moment. The cd tower is also a good idea. Particularly with wall lights, or a light that we can attach to the beam / cd tower

I've looked at shelves for the wall. The corner one wouldn't work as neither side is next to a corner - dh is next to the door into the bedroom (it's on the same wall as the bed), and on my side the wall parallel to the bed is fitted wardrobes along the whole wall.

Yes, we need something each side, otherwise we'd wake each other up stretching over to get stuff.

As for phones shouldn't be in rooms, we both need them for several reasons. If it makes you feel better I have an app called twilight that means using the phone doesn't affect sleep :)

And I've just ordered some small oak box shelves from etsy. Showed dh those and the oak beam and he preferred the shelves. I preferred the beam but had to admit the shelves were more functional with more space to hold stuff. Now on the look out for lights but will probably get some similar to these to attach to the side of the shelves: x 2 Flexible LED Bed Head Light, On / Off Touch Sensitive, Reading Lights + One Driver, LEDB-SC-WH www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006U3VXPC/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_PoD.vb5WVFWXK
