Removing smear marks on glass panelled internal doors.

We bought some new internal doors. They are wooden with 4 glass panels.

The glass has putty (? or something else?) marks which we can't get rid of on the glass panels. We have tried removing the smears with good old fashioned washing up liquid, Lakeland sticky stuff remover, nail varnish remover, vinegar and other general household cleaning fluids, without success Sad

Any ideas out there please? I'm relying on MN to come to the rescue Smile

Use a Stanley blade scraper and try WD40.

if it is real putty (which is greyish white) it will be linseed oil or a substitute, and white spirit on a rag will remove it.

However it is more likely an acrylic sealant, which is sold in brown for stained hardwood doors, and probably other colours. You can get sealant remover from larger building shops that sell bathroom sealant (it comes in tubes and is applied with a squeeze gun). Acrylic is also used for decorators caulk, it is not as sticky or flexible as silicone sealant.

If you have a look online for glazing sealant (not sure of correct name) it is also sold by places that sell wooden doors and the glass to go in them.

Thanks for the replies. I've just been to B&Q and bought some sealant remover so I'll give that a whirl Smile
