Anyone good at electrics?

We've bought a new light fitting for the living room.
DH has wired it in but when he turns the electrics back on the light comes on whether the light switch is on or off.
Any ideas?

yes (sigh)

he should have identified and marked every single wire before he disconnected the old one.

There will probably be two or three cables, each of which will have three wires. The three wires may be red, black and (bare or green); or brown, blue and (bare or green and yellow)

One of the black or blue ones might have a red or brown sleeve or scrap of tape on it.

The outer sheath of the cables may be grey or white. One of them might be a different colour to the others, or a different thickness.

There will then be a thinner, more flexible cable going to the pendant or light fitting. It may have two or three wires which may be brown, blue (and green and yellow) or black and red (and green or green and yellow) if old.

Either post a pic of the connections and wires in the ceiling rose, or describe them in detail.

You must turn off the power at the consumer unit before removing the rose or touching anything. A LIGHT SWITCH DOES NOT CUT THE POWER TO A CEILING ROSE.

I will post a link in a minute.

I'd turn off the lighting circuit switch if you have one in the consumer unit. Till it is sorted out.

Good man PJ
