Removing masonry paint?

We have a gorgeous Bath stone cottage with very old windows at the front. At a distance the windows just look a bit tired but up close whoever painted them last did a really poor job - black masonry paint has been applied to the stone mullions really sloppily often going 'over the lines' etc. I can paint over the existing black paint no problem but can't work out how to remove the brush strokes which are in the wrong place. I had a quick go at sanding and made no impact at all - wondering if there's anything I can do myself to strip it back or if I need to wait until we can afford to get it sandblasted? Any advice or experience would be very welcome!

If it is water-based masonry paint, it will eventually weather and erode. If you can lay your hands on a jetwasher it might take the paint off without damaging the stone. You will have to hold the nozzle close.

We don't have Bath stone here but I believe it is soft and would be damaged by sandblasting, so try this out on a scrap bit of stone.

Sorry pigletjohn I forgot I'd posted this! Not sure the paint is water-based as it's pretty solid but will look into a jetwasher. Yes, Bath stone is very soft so maybe sandblasting isn't the answer either. I could kill the previous owners of this house - they've done so many sloppy jobs and it's a nightmare trying to put it all right!

Thanks for the advice.
