Worktops not oiled before installing

We are having our kitchen fitted including solid oak worktops. Unfortunately, the kitchen fitter did not include the oiling of the worktops in his quote (don't ask me why) so we were having to do it ourselves. He went ahead and fitted the worktops at the weekend (while we were away) and I have just discovered that they should really be oiled BEFORE installing them. How much of an issue will this be? There is a problem with the worktops anyway (due to the supplier, not really the kitchen fitter's fault) so I am very tempted to just take them both out and start again.....

I don't think it matters whether you do it before or after. Just slather on the Danish oil now before you make any marks.

I agree - when we had a kitchen installed, the installers said we had to oil the work tops, and it was fine.

Do watch the wood around the sink - we got seepage into the wood there, and it discoloured badly (I had to bleach it).

We have used osmo worktop oil on ours

I would remove the tops so you can oil the underside. If you have lots of oil on the top as opposed to the bottom then the worktop will take on moisture at different rates and is more likely to move. It would be worth taking the time as the start to get the finish right. I unfortunately had to learn the hard way a year down the line. A good tip I did pick up was to do the oiling late at night so that it can dry when sleeping and then will be fine to use in the morning. Saves being inconvenienced too much then. Hope this helps Smile

I'd recommend using osmo oil- much better than Danish oil. You can get it from Amazon.
