How to people with narrow doorways have big sofas?

I've bored myself stupid looking at sofas, but think I've finally decided on one from sofa.com.
But reading the instructions but in order to get it in, the height of the back of the sofa has to be less than the door width.
Our width is 74cm which doesn't seem overly small but means we must have a very low backed sofa.
Am I missing something or do lots of people have this problem?

One of ours came in through a window.

Another was a modular one, so it came in pieces

The most recent one is a recliner one, so the back actually came off in pieces. So it came in relatively easily.

Ive seen neighbours take their living room window out when moving large furniture!

trilbydoll · 31/08/2015 12:54

Our removal men wrenched one of the feet off with brute force

Still having flashbacks of trying to get M&S large sofa into the house.....had to take patio doors off Shock

pinkbegonia · 31/08/2015 13:04

Thanks for the comments.
Window access isn't a possibility due to tiny windows & brute force wouldn't be my preferred delivery method Grin.
I'll start looking a modular sofas.

I moved a settee yesterday with a back wider than the doorway by upending it and angling it around the corner of the doorway.

I'll come back to draw a diagram, but suffice it to say that when the Man With A Van came along, he was very impressed to see I'd got it in the garden on my own

Ikea sofas eg Ektorp come flatpacked.

If my drawing makes sense to you?

Excellent drawing Thoris

Pivot Grin

only a matter of time before someone finds the Ross/Sofa clip.

OP, something else to add is the squidge factor. Technically the back height of my sofa is an inch more than the door frame, but it got in the door because I preferred to squash the sofa somewhat than to dismantle it.

it was fine. I do think lots of people have this problem, it is often the case that the sofa is dismantled.

lorelei9 · 01/09/2015 12:19

ah, Bertie - cross post!!! Grin

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 01/09/2015 12:25

Also if the door can't open through 180 degrees (ours can't, they're all in corners) taking them off improves access somewhat.

But agree that pivoting is the way to go, providing sofa width approx = doorway height. Most furniture delivery people are magicians anyway Grin

When we moved here we were told that our larger sofa ony just got in, not only door width but narrow hall and sharp turn. Since then sofas got bigger, and it took us ages to find replacements that we both liked, that suited us (one person over 6 ft tall with long legs and one of just over 5ft with short legs) and that we could get in!!

TheIncomparableDejahThoris · 01/09/2015 12:34

If you have to move one on your own, muttering PIVOT (and who took my SANDWICH? for variety) livens up the monotony no end!

It works with friends and family, too.

Friends scriptwriters, thank you. Thank you!

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 01/09/2015 12:49

Had to take the sash window out.

I think it's one of the reasons that John Lewis have a huge warehouse selling "returned" sofas.

pinkbegonia · 01/09/2015 13:06

Loving the diagram Grin.
I've chosen one with a lowish back that will hopefully fit ignoring stairs & sharp corners on the way in.
The sofa company say they'll return them if they can't get them in.

Sofa.com can make some of their sofas in pieces so maybe look at those?

chickenfuckingpox · 01/09/2015 13:16

yes we took the window out however getting it out after i split from my ex was a drama i tried getting it out via the kitchen most of it went through the door then it got stuck fast we couldnt get it back in we couldnt get it out my dad arrived just as i was drilling holes in it to make it weak so i could smash the shit out of it with a hammer he managed to boot it out the door! never ever buying a big sofa again

We had a bed hoisted up the outside of the house and through the hole where we'd taken the bathroom window out.

carolinemoon · 01/09/2015 14:49

We had to cut ours in 2 after moving house and realising it couldn't get down the hall and then pivot round to get through the door.

Luckily DH is very handy, but that didn't make unpicking the leather/sawing through the frame any less nerve wracking! That was probably well over 10 years ago now and we still have it.

ghostspirit · 01/09/2015 14:58

i had sofas from dfs my 3 seater would not fit in. it had to be left outside and got ruined was alot of money to :(

then i had a couple of crappy sofas for a while.

Then got new sofas from dfs again got 2 large 3 seaters. they come a apart.

Bearbehind · 01/09/2015 15:19

Top tip from recent experiences- It's always a good idea to select the sofa (or any big purchase) in store then purchase it on line as you are protected by distance seling regulations and it's much easier to return them, whatever the reason Grin

MazyCrummy · 01/09/2015 15:28

I bought ours from Nabru - they come completely flat-packed and guarantee to fit in anywhere - because I wanted a mahoosive corner thingy and our lounge in on the 1st floor and around a 180 degree bend. I love it and putting it together didn't even get close to impending divorce level
