Nearly done kitchen (pics) need help with colours!

My kitchen units are in and the floor is down but it is all looking very grey. Just wondering if anyone has thoughts on how to finish it? The countertop is dark grey quartz with zinc bits in it.

Doesn't help that it is a mess, my camera flash wouldn't work and it is a gloomy afternoon...

Also I have bought this light in the smoke colour and also in white but am not sure about it helped by my dh and mil laughing hysterically when I showed them

I think you need some bright colour in there. Tiles, glass splash back?

Fwiw I think the light will make it look darker (sorry!).

MairzyDoats · 25/08/2015 18:25

What colour is your splashback going to be? I like it white actually, I'd probably add colour with accessories and a couple of plants myself...

wowfudge · 25/08/2015 19:19

Pale blue or pale green. Is there just going to be one pendant light? It looks as though it will be lovely and restful. I wouldn't go for very bright colours - more subtle can work really well.

housemoverihope · 25/08/2015 20:23

Wasn't going to have tiles or a splashback as have ordered upstands with the worktop.

I was just going to have one pendant light, there is lighting under the wall units and the range hood and tbh don't think I can be bothered with the hassle of messing with electrics too much!

My instinct was to add a bright, bold colour but am interested in the subtle and restful idea too! Do you think paint then or will just accessories be enough?

Orange, red, purple accessories. Or line green and turquoise if you like. No need to go bright on walls or tiles (think of it as your blank canvas and you can change colour scheme with accessories on a whim). With a lovely neutral kitchen, you can actually choose colours opposite each other on the colour wheel (blue and orange/yellow) and it will make whole kitchen pop! Or if you're a gardener, pick a favourite bouquet, and choose accessories within that colour range (lilacs, pinks, oranges, yellows, greens, reds) ... Think summer meadow Smile

A few mix and match jars ,a quirky blind and/ a doormat would be a nice way to brighten it up.
I wouldn't commit to colour on the walls . Pick a shade similar to the presses or just white.
A few pots of colour outside the back door will add colour inside too.

The light isn't great , sorry !!

goblinhat · 25/08/2015 21:41

I would go for a lightish green at least on some of the walls. It would tie in nice;y from the green of the garden, provide continuity between the the two areas and ( especially when the French doors are open ) make the kitchen seem much bigger.

I don't like the light, sorry- a bit too bling for me.

Nydj · 25/08/2015 22:02

I don't think the light will give enough light for the kitchen area.

Lelivre · 25/08/2015 22:06

I like the light. I see you like a bit of glamour Smile

Are the cupboards grey or white and is the floor grey?

Does the grey lean, blue, green or is it quite warm and beigy?

On my screen it all looks like shades of a warm grey. If so think it needs some contrast. I think you are saying it is bland? Which is how feel about my kitchen! And I'm thinking about what colour to bring in.

I would be tempted with green but medium to deep toned. Paint would be a good way to dip your toe in. I love fired earth garden city. Or bring the outdoors in with a fresh green. Or what about a teal or a mustard yellow. It has to be a colour you really like if painting a splash back as it will be in your line of sight all the time you are cooking.

Blodss · 26/08/2015 00:15

I love it and I quite like a neutral look too. Even like the light!

Blodss · 26/08/2015 00:18

I like this look

I don't like bright colours in kitchens, I find them a bit contrived and prefer the soft colours myself.

My cupboards are a pale greeny grey colour, black worktops and upstands, wooden floor. We have kept most walls off white with just one feature wall in "Mouse's Back" and roman blinds in similar muted colours. Neutral colours like in Blodss pic above but a bit less countryish

travertine · 26/08/2015 00:39

I really think you may need a splashback. Upstands I don't like, that's a beautiful kitchen. (Got some amazing Ted Baker splashbacks, just saying) if you stick a bright bold colour in then you're tied to it. Whatever you do stick to long clean lines and no pattern if you tile it.

travertine · 26/08/2015 00:42

Sorry not no pattern just not pretending to be stone or something. Geometric would look good as a pp up thread suggested.

inmyshoos · 26/08/2015 07:52

I like secondtimers ideas. Love the Orla Keily (sp?) type payterns and colours.

Also like blodds pics.

PancakeHen · 26/08/2015 08:15

We are about to move into a house with a similar kitchen to Blodss without the shelf (but I might pinch that idea!). I'm thinking of adding colour with curtains and accessories, probably raspberry red. But I need to live there first I guess Smile

mandy214 · 26/08/2015 09:05

I wouldn't add any colour, especially with such a statement light. Not with trickets / jars etc, just my opinion but I think that looks a bit 90s. I think the kitchen design is kind of minimalist / contemporary - you will spoil the look by adding things to sit on the counter, cluttering the look.

I like the light by the way, it will look fab. We have the same kitchen I think (although a wooden floor) and we have a very pale shade of grey on the walls. Does the kitchen open out into a dining area? We have one wall that we have wall papered - the wall furthest away from the kitchen which adds colour but the kitchen part itself we have kept very light / plain / subtle.

suzyrut · 26/08/2015 14:53

I agree about the splashback idea but I would probably be tempted to go with some marble or geometric tiles on the whole of the right hand wall if you want to keep to the glamorous look of the light.

Not being able to see the other walls it's difficult to say whether you could do this, but I am mid-kitchen build and I'm putting a chalkboard wall in mine, it will give a bit of contrast to my grey kitchen/white worktops but still keeping it monochrome.

housemoverihope · 26/08/2015 15:46

Thanks for all the ideas. The other wall has a space for a big range and although it opens onto the dining room they aren't really connected although I'm going to try and make them follow through.

The range is the main reason I didn't want a splash back, thought I would either need something on both sides or on neither.

It's not easy to see on the picture as the doors still have film on them. The units are actually a light matt grey and the floor slightly darker.

We are in the process of desiging out kitchen and its very similar to your which looks fab by the way - can I be cheeky and ask what flooring that is please? Its just what im looking for!

housemoverihope · 31/08/2015 11:15

Nickinoo - it's polyflor colonia (vinyl tiles but much cheaper than amtico and karndean). My uncle does flooring and recommended it. It does look fab and is very easy to clean and most importantly for someone who spends their life barefoot is nice and warm!

blueteapot · 31/08/2015 15:14

Keep it neutral and plain! It looks beautiful as it is.

PrimalLass · 31/08/2015 20:38

That light will get really greasy.
