paint over shower tiles?

and now for something completely different....

there are old-ish tiles in shower cubicle...is it possible to add a splash (shower, geddit?!) of colour by painting them or do we have to take the tiles out and replace?

obviously, you'd have to use specialist, water-resistant paint...does such a thing exist for indoors? or could you use exterior, weather-resistant paint?

might be worth trying rather than paying for tile removal and replacement.

any thoughts/ideas/experience very much appreciated

thank you

You can use tile paint. It can be difficult to get a good result that doesn't look as though you've just painted the tiles. As white is inoffensive, consider digging out and replacing the grouting with different coloured grouting instead. A messy job, but cheaper than re-tiling and overall probably less hassle than painting the tiles.

I second the warnings that tile paint can look very "painted on". However, unless you plan on a close inspection of your tiles, I wouldn't worry too much. Smile

We inherited some painted tiles in our bathroom, the whole room had been done and generally looked ok, but the stuff in the shower cubicle gradually got more and more water underneath it and looked pretty grim. We stripped it all off and repainted (were about to sell and wouldn't recoup the cost of refitting the whole room) and it looked pretty smart - just pay lots of attention to the grout and do two coats so there are no gaps for water to get in.

What about these: www.stickandgo.com ? You just stick them on top.

If you paint them you must prep the tiles properly. I also going using a gloss roller gives a smooth finish.
