House shakes when we slam door..

Is this bad? It feels very dreadful!

It is a newish back door which dh is having a trouble locking currently. (Its a bit fiddly for me but OK). So he is slamming it hard - which seems to work on the 3rd ish go.

However I am lying upstairs in bed and the whole house shakes when he does it. Bed, floors, walls etc. Bedroom is not above the door and although he is slamming it hard it is not what I would call excessive force.

Should I be worried the place is going to tumble down?

Buy a handle and use your key - stop slamming it unless you want falling plaster and cracks!

PigletJohn · 17/08/2015 22:27

is it a plastic door?

poocatcherchampion · 17/08/2015 22:31

Yes it is plastic - upvc with glass in a glass frame (hinged I can never remember the difference between French windows and patio doors)

It has a handle - he is slamming it inwards to make it lock - lock runs at the top and bottom as well as the middle. You push the handle up to engage the lock.

Hope that makes sence PJ

Ours (installed less than a year ago) was doing the same thing - stiff to open, hard to close, making the wall move. We got the fitters in to check it, and it turns out that there were some bits which should have been tightened at the factory but weren't, so the door was pulling away from the hinges. The fitter tightened them up (the loose bits were concealed inside the metalwork so we couldn't have done it ourselves) and it's been fine since.

You say the door is newish - can you call the company who fitted it to come and check it over? They should be able to do that for you.

adjusting plastic doors is not an easy DIY job, but there is sure to be someone in your town who specialises in repairing and adjusting plastic doors and windows, because it is such a common job. Ask around though for a recommendation. Someone with patio doors may have had them fixed. It should not be expensive.

I had a patio door which was sagging slightly - could be shut, but I had to lift it as I shut it. Not a long term solution, but might be worth trying the technique?

get it fixed rather than wrecking it. If this is a rental, let your landlord know NOW before you cause real damage.

poocatcherchampion · 19/08/2015 07:14

I can get the door fixed no probs as the fitters are back to do another job in a few weeks.

My concern is that the house us shaking - should it be that easy to make a house shake? Is something else going to make it shake? Will it tumble down in a strong wind?

In true MN style I want to pass you a grip. Of course your house isn't going to fall down unless your OH has caused serious damage with all the door slamming.

poocatcherchampion · 19/08/2015 17:45

OK grip gratefully received. Grin
