Hi,

I am looking to redo the ensuite as the shower tray was found to be leaking yikes. Can I have some advise on rectangular shower enclosure which is trouble free and long lasting? Many thanks.

no particular brand but things to look out for:

  • make sure the door doesn't open outwards, because it will then drip on the floor after your shower. It needs to open or fold inwards.
  • look for replaceable seals as they can get mouldy (despite best housework) and impossible to clean
  • think about maintenance; getting trap out to remove hair etc.
  • don't have a wet room unless you are in a tropical climate or can afford a bomb for underfloor heating.

...or of course need one for access reasons.

Consider a tray with legs and removable trim panels so you can look underneath for damp (and can also change or tighten the trap more easily if you ever need to).

If you do get a new tray or trap, look for a trap than can be cleaned from above, it will have a sort of mushroom cap and a tubular inner that lifts out. Keep the instructions. Macalpine is a good brand of trap.

Many thanks for the kind advice, duly noted. Have anyone used Karla shower enclosure before?

I paid the extra for an easy clean coating and never regretted it. I just squeegee down after every shower and do a more thorough clean mainly on the joints and outside every two weeks which in reality only takes 15mins.

Many thanks and will note that.

Don't get sliding doors as the runners rust and are impossible to clean.

Great advice from PigletJohn, and PettsWoodParadise, - plus:- get it installed by a reputable plumber who will make sure the tray is sealed to the walls correctly. Otherwise you will be back to square-one.... but a lot poorer...! Julie (Stopcocks Women Plumbers).
