OK property geeks, have a look at this and tell me when you think it was built... I've just got the title deeds and was surprised!

Chimney breast, bricks & plot size.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/08/2015 12:58

I kept changing my mind between 1930's and 1950's, they are often similar is style.

TremoloGreen · 11/08/2015 12:58

wowfudge - here's your prize. you have to share him with everyone else who thought the right answer though.

It must have been comprehensively refurbed in the 70s (that brick fireplace surround, the windows, the built in louvred wardrobes etc)

TremoloGreen · 11/08/2015 13:00

Oh, yep. The windows are going.

What would look nice and sympathetic then, for all you architecture mavens?

And I'm going to bash the fireplace in with a big hammer. Obviously.

Without reading the full thread, 1950s/1960s council house, the brick was added later; before that it was concrete panels that may have been pebble dashed.

thenumberseven · 11/08/2015 13:02

Tremo Congratulations on your purchase Wine Wine and Flowers

Hellionandfriends · 11/08/2015 13:02

I initially guessed 1970's, then after seeing the roof line/shape in a later photo thought 1930's.

HowDdo2You · 11/08/2015 13:02

I would look around locally and get hardwood to match the original windows.

I hope you are keeping the chimney.

wonkylegs · 11/08/2015 13:06

It was the shape of the roof (the slight curve to the pitch) and the size of the gardens that said 30s to me rather than 50s

wowfudge · 11/08/2015 13:07

I'm delighted with my prize - what a cutie.

It's a house with potential for an update Tremolo.

ChilliAndMint · 11/08/2015 13:08

Keep the stones from the fireplace, they would be great in an alpine garden.

yomellamoHelly · 11/08/2015 13:09

Size of the garden said 1930s to me. Rest I was thinking 70s.

TremoloGreen · 11/08/2015 13:14

Yup - I have precisely tuppence-ha'penny to do it all though. First thing is getting gas plumbed in and new central heating!

About to have DC2, so thought I would tackle some of the DIY jobs and just let the kids trash the carpets for the first year or so.

I looked at the first picture, and read the first sentence that said he extended. Then looked at the floorplan. IMO the walk through dining room to the kitchen ( bed 2/ study / downstairs loo is extension) makes it older.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 11/08/2015 13:51

for me it was those angled ceilings upstairs, the size of the windows & the dark beamy bits.

A childhood friend lived in a house a lot like that (& it was a council house! Grin) & it was 1930s

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 11/08/2015 13:55

it's kind of Arts & Crafts style?

Agreeing with nearly all your suggestions Camel THat's the plan down the line for the kitchen, and I will build a garden studio for working in. For now, I'm just going to brighten up the existing kitchen. It actually has new appliances and worktops and tiles but they kept the old floor and cupboards - they are super-sturdy.

I'm not a big fan of en-suites though I think a walk-in wardrobe would be nice. Not that I have many clothes! They currently have it as a huge hot airing cupboard. I guess I will still need a hot water tank somewhere as a family house with 2.5 bathrooms will not take a combi?

TremoloGreen · 11/08/2015 14:10

Our last house was a tiny 2.5 bed terrace with a paved courtyard garden and had been completely gutted and refurbed* when we moved in, so this is going to be a sea-change.

*In a really souless, gloss white kitchen, big shiny hotel bathroom kind of way
