Where can i find a flat for my daughter in London?

I'm hoping some wise London mumsnetters can point me in the right direction as I don't know the area well myself.

My daughter has finished her studies and will be working in the centre of London. She and we are very fortunate in that we can help her buy a small flat. So, where do we start?

She seems to prefer South West London (had a flat share in Norbiton, Kingston) but we've looked there and it's much too expensive. I'm worried that she will choose an area that she doesn't know.

Where can we start looking? Our budget is £200k.

The crofton park one is on a really nice street. My friend lives at the other end. Safe and a community feel - they have Christmas events where they househop having a drink at everyone's house. And in summer the street is closed for street parties. Really nice area to live.

About my friend lives in the same area (near Amen Corner) and I agree - there's a Sainsburys local there, a nice wine bar, and right in Tooting you have primark, a bigger Sainsbos, Wilkos etc...

My friend also usesthe overground Thameslink/Farringdon.

Tooting is 'up and coming' and I think losing the ethnic side a bit more and becoming more 'hipster' in places. Tooting Bec in particular has some nice bars.

The problem is, as a young professional I would have preferred to live near town and make the most of London. You are unlikely to get anywhere for that and if you do it may be a long commute which defeats the object of living in London (IMO). Hampton is lovely but very family orientated with gastro pubs rather than trendy bars. Maybe an investment property would be better.

hobbes McCluskey's has shut down???? When? Sob. Had one of the best nights of my life there only a couple of years ago.

Berrylands is one of the most depressing areas I've ver been. Looked at houses there when DC were tiny and the other young mums pushing buggies in the street just shuffled along like Stepford wife zombies. There was nothing to do, no community spirit. The nearest thing I could find to fun was three plummy chaps chatting in the second hand bookshop. Chilling.

Second-hand bookshop in Berrylands? Was that on the hill going up from the station? Gosh, it must have gone up in the world since I lived round there! There was a brilliant bakery near the top of the slope where we used to get freshly baked jam doughnuts to fortify ourselves on the long walk back home from the station! And there was a pharmacy owned by Mr Bristow (no relation to the Frank Dickens character). And, for some reason, if I remember correctly, a travel agent! Not forgetting Parfum d'egout, emanating from the sewage farms.

she should rent and buy a few years down the line with your generous deposit?

Sad so sad. Happy memories of fantastic live gigs.

Only one mention so far but worth mentioning again; Leyton would be a good bet as well as E20. Also came across an ex council art Deco gem in Streatham/Brixton borders nr Leigham court road via modern house a few weeks back for 210k

Did anyone say Brentford (sorry, haven't read the whole thread) - you might be lucky there.

Hobbes8 · 14/08/2015 08:09

There was a shared ownership flat suggested in Boston Manor custardlover but you won't find much in Brentford for £200k these days. London has gone nuts!

There is a studio flat on Zoopla at Ravenscourt Park, near Hammersmith in zone 2, on the market for £217,500. It has a studio room with separate kitchen and bathroom. It has been on for a few months so they might take an offer. Good luck!
