dd2 is currently in the boxroom which is 8' by 6"6. she's in a toddler bed, but at nearly 5 we're on borrowed time there. Moving/extending not an option.

we've agreed that dd1 (8.5) is going to move into the boxroom, as dd2 has more Big Toys, plus she's served her time in the little room. At first we thought a high sleeper might be the answer, but now I'm worried about how much of the window that would block (annoyingly, the window is big, and tall, and bang in the middle of the narrow back wall), and whether it would dominate such a little room. A midsleeper is now my preferred option, with a clothes rail at the foot of the bed as that would leave no room for a wardrobe. And wall shelves (string shelves or cheapo copy) on the free wall.

Does anyone have any better ideas???

I just linked to one less than193 - there's loads!

We had the same problem. Definitely a shorty bed or low sleeper with cupboards, along the window wall as this will open up the room. This is your friend, an overbed storage unit, there are many styles. Good luck!

I thought these folding wall desks looked good when looking for DS. Ended up with Elfa wall unit which incorporated a shelf for desk and saved floor space in the end but a folding one would be flexible.

The link I posted is 190.5cm

Love that one from the Apartment Therapy link with the book shelves at the end. You could do the same but with white Ikea floating shelves so it looked streamlined.

Could you have bunks in big room which might buy you couple of years?

From your picture I can't tell if you have the common box room issue with over the stair well void eating into the room at all? I.e where some of the floor area is lost, but about two foot up it is space but without serious adaptation you can't use it due to no floor space. If yes then I have had two such houses with two such box rooms, the first the previous owners had built in a wardrobe with hinged doors, the bedroom was 7ft 6 by 6ft 6 so tiny but larger than some I've seen. The house we are in now we have a built up a box area but only to half way with a flip lid on it. The former was a great space user but did make the room feel more closed in. The latter hides all sort of junk and leaves space behind the bed for book shelves etc.

More of the same idea.

This might work
Billy bookcases are 40cm wide and can have doors on so would cover hanging needs at the foot of the bed - tension rods for rails

Kallax I think are 39 CM deep to sit behind Billy, facing the bed as in the pic
Kallax at the headboard bit
Bests, Stuva or kallax at the top?

Search platform bed (space saver) on getlaiddeds.co.uk and you will find 193cm bed frames. We've recently got one for dd"s room of similar proportions and I'm very pleased with it. Dd is a teenager and insisted on a small double bed which I though was going to swamp the room but it"s surprising what illusion you get of space when the bed fits across on the back wall. She does have the window in her room to the side though and not at the end and no issues with the radiator so that has helped being able to fit a bed in at the end.

We completely gave up on th idea of wardrobes Insread my dh made a floor to ceiling single wooden storage frame which would accommodate the ikea Kallax inserts - there was enough height for 2cupboard units, 2 drawer units, 2 box units and a little extra space on top. We situated this on the right hand side of the room right next to the bed. To the left hand side of this frame we attached a hanging rail, going right over the end of the bed and securing it to the end wall from which she hangs all her clothes. To the left he attached a matching piece of wood to the side of the cupboard unit as far as it would go to use as a desk/dressing table and bought spindly legs from ikea to keep it up at the other end. This does all need to be securely fixed to the wall though. The bed frame also allows for plenty of storage underneath.

I'm really pleased with how well all this works and she is really pleased with it. The hanging rail over the end of the bed though was key to maximising the space in the room as it takes away the need for any wardrobe space.

Good luck - box rooms are not easy!

Bed frame on Kallax (put several together so things don't get lost under the bed space) and then built in storage as per previous pics from others

Bit of a long shot but do you have 2 reception rooms? Could you sleep downstairs and the DDs have a large room each? Would probably only work if you have enough dining space in the kitchen but we did this in the last house we lived in as the DC who had the box room couldn't have friends to play/sleep overs. It worked really well for us as we stored our clothes in the box room so our 'bedroom' felt really big and everyone was happy.

I think the key to maximising space in a tiny bedroom is having the bed across the wall under the window, with built in drawer beneath.

MissMuffetisin · 11/08/2015 07:50

I really think you need to do a floor plan op. Then you if you are low tech like me can draw to scale on graph paper , and cut out the to scale shapes of the furniture you are thinking about and shuffle it round on the room plan to see what will work. I'm sure there are computer progs that will do this too - you can probably get them free off DIY type sites
