Hi,

My husband and I are currently toying with the idea of moving up north. We live in Purley just outside of Croydon at the moment and have a shared ownership flat however, we want to buy our own place outright. Due to my husbands bad credit rating we can only look to get something for around £120k MAX which won't get us anything here or in Kent where my family are. We have looked at Norfolk, Yorkshire, Liverpool, Wales, Northumberland, Stoke, Leicster, Brimingham but have no idea where is nice in th ese areas? All sell 3 bedroomed houses in the price range but no idea if its a bad area? Please help?

£120 k won't get you far in North Yorkshire.

OwlOffshore · 04/08/2015 19:41

Northernlurker - there's a 3 bed on Wallgates Lane in Norton/Malton for £115k (for example). Not chocolate-box pretty like many in the area but a good house.

Where have you looked in Kent? You might find something in your budget in parts of Thanet or the Medway.

EasyFromNowOn · 04/08/2015 19:50

In the Stoke area, try Biddulph as your best bet. There may be a couple of ex-LA properties in Brown Edge or Endon, which is pretty rural but only 10-15 minutes from Hanley. Packmoor might be an option - more likely to be a relatively new build there though. Norton and Birches Head are both close to the city but mostly residential, and have large open spaces around them.

South of the city, look around Barlaston (probably not Barlaston itself but you might find something in a surrounding village) or maybe Werrington or Weston Coyney if you are lucky.

I'd stay far away from Silverdale or Clayton - it can go from ok to seriously dodgy from one end of the street to the other.

Hellionandfriends · 04/08/2015 19:52

Hull area is very cheap!!

TheGonnagle · 04/08/2015 19:54

£120k won't buy you much n Birmingham I'm afraid.

EasyFromNowOn · 04/08/2015 20:01

Also in Stoke, look at Milton, which is a village 10 minutes from the city centre, £120k would easily get you a 3bed terrace or 1970's semi there, and it's a decent enough area, although with a busy main road. Has it's own primary school and is 10-15 minutes walk from a decent secondary.

There's also the Baddeley Green estate, where you'd also easily get a 3bed terrace, and if you choose carefully you could get one with massive views out over open countryside. It's mostly ex-LA but it is an ok place to live, and it has easy access to at least 2 primary schools.

Personally I'd go to Beverley though. Just stunning area! Market town a stones throw from Hull. Beverley is beautiful

Or a nice area by the sea. Hornsea. Tucked out of the way but accessible to Beverley and Hull.

I was just coming on to post about Lincoln, www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-35200728.html it's a very rural city but there are pretty good transport links into the city from most of the major suburbs and there are some pretty decent restaurants too.

KirstyHeath · 04/08/2015 21:56

Thanks for your help everybody - Licoln looks good!! I'm from Maidstone in Kent would love to move there but think its just out of reach - Medway is not a nice area and Thanet very run down too! It's like most places everywhere has its good and bad points! Nothing set in stone yet we are just looking into what is around - obviously I would make sure my OH is in work first before we move so may rent for a bit and then go for there. So thanks for the ideas of where is best to live as we have no preference really so its difficult for us lol

Look at Beverley too! It's a very nice town and the access to hull is good

Lollipopgirl8 · 05/08/2015 06:35

I think 120 will get you something o
in reasonable area of birmingham not best and definitely not 3 bed /period property

Belleview · 05/08/2015 07:59

This is a good place for a chef to live,it's a Foodie Town, and rural.

If DH likes rural... check out the views on this one!

Near Pontefract, Yorks. Price is over at £130k but you should look at properties £10k over as you never know what the sellers' position is or what they will accept, even at this price range.

ReallyNotAMorningPerson · 05/08/2015 09:31

Oops posted too soon. Says it's in a village with access to Trans Pennine trail (gorgeous rural walks) but would be short distance to major towns for work/restaurants.

ReallyNotAMorningPerson · 05/08/2015 09:40

Love those cottages in Smethwick and Hornsea!
