Moving to the Southside of Glasgow

Hi everyone,

My partner and I are currently looking to buy a place in the Southside of Glasgow, and we're wondering about the best places to stay for schools, parks, coffee shops and restaurants. Although we're having a wee girl in October we still want to have places to go and things to do within walking distance so don't really fancy Newton Mearns/Clarkston overly much. Anyone got any ideas? Budgets about £160k (could stretch to £200k but would prefer not to!

Can't comment on school quality, but Shawlands will meet your wants for parks, coffee shops and restaurants. It's a lot of flats though, so if you are looking for a house then you might struggle to get something within close walking distance to everything there. Giffnock is another nice place to live, the schools there are of a good standard, so I hear. Prices are high, but it would depend on the property you are looking for whether your budget would meet.

Muirend and clarkston are both lively and within walking distance of parks too. Probably cheaper property wise than giffnock, and certainly more likely to find a house than shawlands, which as pp said, has a very high proportion of flats.

I would think about the A77 corridor, from Shawlands through to Giffnock, including Newlands.

If you have a 160K budget, have a look at Orchard Park, you can get a 2-3 bedroom house for that. It's within walking distance of Eastwood Park, Waitrose & shops in Giffnock. Schools in East Renfrewshire are excellent.

Shawlands definitely has more hustle & bustle but is mostly flats (maybe you could get a main door flat for your budget).

Newlands & Merrylee are in between.

I live in Busby in Clarkston. it's a 10/15 minute walk to lots of restaurants, a couple of Delis, there's a butcher, lots of coffee shops etc plus Williamwood High is in the catchment which is one if the best schools in Scotland.

giffnock has more choice as far as restaurants and shops go.

Try Glasgow local and Scotsnet for advice. Pollokshields very popular and central.

AS other have said but also look at Langside which is just next to Shawlands and Battlefield. Lots of young families in the area and quite a trendy feel. Primaries are ok, but the best schools are in East Renfrewshire and one reason why property prices much higher. Clarkston definitely has a more suburban, boring feel to it than Shawlands etc but the schools are good, lots of family based activities on and two train stations make access to rest of south side and city centre v.easy.
