*HOW* much for a worktop???

We thought we would splash out on a lovely worktop for our new kitchen, i.e. not get a bog-standard laminate one, and asked our local kitchen place for a quote for their acrylic worktop. We need 2 x 2m lengths, plus a little island in the middle.
£4.5K!! What?!
We were thinking maybe £2-2.5K, so now need to reconsider.
We're looking for something as pale as possible (kitchen is dark grey), matt, ideally with sparkly/glitter bits in it or just a slight pattern.
Can anyone recommend one that isn't silly money and will still look good? We're concerned that if we get a pale laminate it will stain and rapidly look rubbish.

Well I have a quite for a 1.2 x 2 metre island plus a 3.2 metre length of standard worktop in granite or quartz for £2700 inc fitting so either acrylic is crazy money or you need to shop around!

Agree that you need to shop around. I don't know whether acrylic is particularly expensive, but I have quartz and I think you should be able to get your requirements for the £2-2.5k you originally budgeted.

I've just paid £3,400 for Quartz. Two lengths of around 2.5m and a small island, plus a length of around 1.8m in my utility room.

It's mid grey and the cupboards are white. It looks fantastic!

How much would it cost in Wood? Wood is nice!

We have wood at the moment and it feels lovely but drives me nuts (can't be doing with oiling, sanding and mouldy spots!)

I reckon ours is about 6m of granite. We paid about 5k. Bought direct from a supplier.

Mirostone !! Went thru same process as you quoted 4 grand plus for others this was 1700 Inc fitting.been in 6 weeks and we are over the moon

That's curious, lighteningirl, that's the brand we got quoted for! Clearly we need to ask other suppliers...

I got mine via a builders merchant type place who recommended a fitter the fitter then used his trade discount to get that price. Would have cost more to buy it ourselves than he charged to supply and fit! The kitchen company would have charged double. I sourced every bit separately and paid separately for the electrics, kitchen units, fitter, worktops, tiles, tiler etc. It was very hard work but my quote from kitchen company was £20 grand and I did I it for about £11 once they know you are getting other quotes prices drop dramatically.

I had a quote for German laminate in 70mm with a metal edge (so ok not the average laminate but still laminate) 4.5metres no corners only one exposed edge for wait for it...£3,500 hahahaha!
I am going direct to the Corian fabricator with a double sink and 50mm deep including templating and fitting for less than half that. I get it tomorrow so will report back if you are interested.

Yes v interested kitchen porn is my new thing! I got a ceramic sink so no sink inset and I wanted tiles not upstairs which made my worktop cheaper I think the sink adds about £500 to Corian and upstairs would've added even more

9m of iroko worktop and upstands, £541. I have seriously no idea how people can spend so much on granite, I don't like that cold hard surface anyway!

We are more than pleased with our worktops/sinks. The best of it is the seamless sink/worktop. I'm sure this added less than half what you mentioned for 1.5 bowls and they are of good size. Maybe in the wrong area but... Let me know if you would like contact details.

We have been looking at oak and walnut worktops, and were worried about the usual staining around sink areas. Have found some really helpful people at Norfolk Oak who can treat the wood so you don't need to worry about it.

Has definitely set my mind at rest especially around the sink area which I was worried about, I have ordered a sample so will be able to see for myself.

What do they treat it with, Flip?

I paid £1200 for 4m of granite, fitted (with inset sink and hob but no drainage).

Shop around - you'd be amazed at how much difference there is in price.

As someone who is not impressed with brand new solid walnut worktop and has done up a few houses the most solid regardless or acrylic wood wtc has been IKEA!!

TremoloGreen it was worktop-express.co.uk. Flipflop99 I think iroko is more naturally water resistant than oak? I guess you still have to oil it even though it's treated.

Yes, I have heard that about Iroko too but I hear it can come from some unsustainable sources.
I have just received the sample through the post, and have to admit it looks like lovely wood - beautiful colour.
The treatment is called nano coating, and is supposed to do away with the need for oiling, which was a big concern for us because I really don't have the time or inclination for all of that!
Just going to have a final measure up and check with DH and I think we will place the order - fingers crossed!

FlipFlop - did you get the nano coated oak worktop from Norfolk Oak? If so, how is it standing the test of time?
