How to add trellis to a fence with concrete posts?

We need to make our fencing a foot higher so plan to add some trellis of some sort. The posts are concrete... Does anyone have some simple ideas for securing the trellis to the top (that won't break the bank as there's loads of it!)

Drill holes, use rawl plugs and screws.

Sorry, should've said that dh doesn't want to drill into the posts so we need to attach it to the fence or attach a small post to the top of the concrete post...

You can get post extenders on ebay.

Or replace the existing panels with fancy ones with trellis built in?

Bouncearound · 12/06/2015 20:02

Thanks. Existing panels are fairly new so don't want to replace them but we need to dog proof the garden asap! Will look for post extenders, thank you

It will be fairly unsatisfactory.

Drilling into concrete posts will encourage them to crack. Any weight or wind on the trellis will have leverage to break off your fixing. You can put battens onto the edge frame of your fence panels, but if they are the lap type the edges will be very flimsy. I would use stainless bolts and nuts because nails and screws will probably split the wood or tear out in wind.

If they are featheredge panels and you can fix to two or more of the horizontal timbers it will be a lot better.

they look a good idea. The advert claims they are corrosion-proof galvanised, but galvanising only delays the rusting of steel. Outdoors it will weather away in a few years. I would suggest giving them a couple of coats of oil paint before fitting, perhaps in a dark brown if that's the colour of your timber. After they have been fitted you won't be able to reach the concealed surfaces..

Does this help, what type of panels do you have ? I used pressure treated softwood timber that was very cheap in a bulk pack, and used corrosion resistant deck screws.

Hi, I can't use the above post extenders as my concrete posts are solid square shape, they don't have the ridges for the fence panels to sit in. Anyone try using these kind of post extenders above a concrete post? I think that they are intended for timber posts, but I am thinking it might work. can't find another solution! www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/product/taurus-fence-post-extender-100mm-oxide-red-485064?vat=1&shopping=true&infinity=ict2~net~gaw~ar~358306792714~kw~~mt~~cmp~Smart%20Shopping%20%3E%20Catch%20All%20Products~ag~Ad%20group&gclid=Cj0KCQjw9tbzBRDVARIsAMBplx_0e4PC_BzCzJIvp0JHFahMUMfaKXgTSeCRP0LK-WER0HXdB-zHZrgaAvVSEALw_wcB
