How do people move with short notice

can anyone explain as im sure it is pretty common to exchange and move wthin a week? I know the standard advice not to book the removal co until exchange happened but how do other people do it if they do?

2 weeks is more the norm than 1

only in MN-dream world is this ultra-rapid move deemed normal. 2 weeks is standard and the minimum acceptable; and that assumes you've already done a lot of packing, have provisional remover booking, have your redirect form ready to submit, and so on and so forth.

We did it in 2 weeks after a LONG wait for exchange - it was a lot of work (we packed ourselves) even though we weren't working and had done a lot of pre-packing.

BTW remember you need to insure the new place from exchange so have a policy ready to go.

If you rent you usually have too! In the months leading up to contract renewal I declutter and group things so it is easier to drop in boxes and label. H hires a van for the day and we pull in as much help as poss - I remember one move he could only get one of those open van types and it was snowing thankfully it was not far.

We are viewing somewhere on Monday. Hopefully we can move into it by next weekend.

We aren't having to move everything out of where we are now right away which helps.

Thanks all we all agreed on a date but exchanged still hasn't happened and solicitors can't confirm if it definitely will on time for the move.it's only 8 days away and removal company is asking for 30% deposit for firm booking.we will pay for them to pack tho. How does the mail redirecting work. Do i just simply call up and set it up?

We exchanged and completed on the same day. We couldn't exchange earlier as both parties had some paperwork to sort out but we picked a moving date about 3 weeks previously, booked the removals etc and then everyone had a date to work to.

You need to hassle your solicitors. If something needs doing prior to completion then ask them what it is. Might also be worth utilising your estate agent too as they can call both lots of solicitors. Ours was really useful at hassling both lots to get things done.

Oh and you have to go into a Post Office with ID to set up the redirection. Takes about a week to activate though I think.

or fill out a form. You pay per surname, it takes 5 working days to set up and there may be ID requirements..

We had 48 hours between exchange and completion. Basically we set the completion date for 2 weeks away, and the exchange date kept getting pushed back and back. We couldn't move the completion date to match because it was the Friday before Christmas and my baby was due on Boxing Day.

We had provisional booking with our movers, who also packed for us the day before. I'd already set up my mail redirection so there were Christmas cards on the doormat when we came in. I'd even ordered an online food shop for the day after with all my Christmas groceries.

Obviously all of this was done at risk, but could have been cancelled if things had fallen through. Stressful though.
