Raising a door frame?

We're buying a very old house and a couple of the door frames are too low for DH to get through (although ceiling heights are fine once through).
Ideally we'd like to enlarge the hole and raise the frame height a bit. In some places it's obviously a stud wall so that's presumably straightforward but others are solid (stone) walls, and one has a small beam lintel above it. Do we need it checked by a structural engineer to see if it's feasible or would a builder be ok? Has anyone done this?

Is it listed if it's very old?

We've done this in a 300 year old house. We got a trusted builder to do it and haven't involved any surveyors. He removed a rotten old timber lintel and replaced it with a steel one (I think, it was definitely metal) and used old reclaimed bricks too (new door is narrower but taller). Then plastered over it all.

The only thing is at it is straight and very few walls and frames in our house are straight!

No it's not listed. It's a mere 200 years old, a youngster! We don't know any builders here, trusted or not, unfortunately.
Confused

LOL at "bump".

That's what your DH will be doing unless you raise the door frames. Grin

(can't add anything useful, I'm afraid).

Grin thanks Cointreau!
