Wales and accessible transport

Hello.
I know it is a Country in itself, but can anybody suggest any areas that are accessible via train from Manchester?

We are looking to move somewhere in Wales but need a train commute to Manchester, preferably within an hour or so.

Just ideas of general areas would be fine, if anybody can help.

Your question confused me as I can't see how there can be any part of wales within 1hr train of manchester - is there? Even Chester to Manchester is 1hr 15 best case.

Wrexham is 1hour 45mins to Manchester by train

Bangor, Gwynedd to Manchester is 2hrs 30mins and more.

You could live just in Wales, somewhere like Overton-on Dee area, car to Whitchurch Shropshire (15 mins) then train to Manchester, which is 1hr 5 mins.

Yes the best I can do is about 1hr 20. Right on the welsh border driving to Crewe and getting a 40 min train to Manc. That's still 1hr 40 allowing for hitting crewe and parking though...

I'm not sure if it wil be doable.
The commute would only be twice a week to drop off dd and pick her up from school.
I suppose 2 hours would be fine at a push, but one of the days would be sunday, hence why I think it might not be doable.
we love Wales and would love to live there, we always said we would.
Now we have signed dd up for school there and there are no alternatives.
sometimes dh could drive there but couldn't rely on this permanently.

I think you need to do a little more research on that place...as a start, the access to Newbridge will be very entertaining in ice or snow. There's also a microclimate issue.

there are other reasons to do more research too.

Wales and trains don't really go together, a chap called Beeching is responsible for that and it will never improve. Forget the free prescriptions and look for somewhere within sensible distance of where you need to be. You can still get lovely places; and visit all the delights of Wales too.

Have you looked at mid West Cheshire - places like Malpas, Tattenhall, Farndon, Tarporley? Still not great for the train but know a bit of time off and no distance from Wales (Farndon is the other side of a bridge)

It is amazing how house prices drop once you are over the border from Cheshire into Wales, even just a few hundred yards.
There is a real snob value to living in Cheshire.

Try Talwrn Green, Overton, Hanmer, Penley, Bronnington.
All very close to Whitchurch Station but cheaper than Cheshire, though not the wonderful views that you get further into Wales.

Newbridge has a rubbish dump closeby so beware.

Yes, Holt the other side of that bridge from Farndom is noticeably cheaper and in reality the two villages merge.

Ellesmere is lovely, it's just in North Shropshire. All lovely and green but sorry, no mountains!

I was born and raised in Nantwich Cheshire and also loved Chester and these areas, also love Tarvin.
however, unless we seriously downsized, we couldn't afford to live there. We don't mind a bit smaller as one dc left already and ds2 is 20. But we'd end up with a shoe box in this area.

Maybe you have a point there. I will look at different areas. We usually blindfold each other after drawing a circle in the area we want to be.
We ended up in Norwich last time and spent 12 years there.
Dh has done some work in LLandudno and Colwyn Bay recently and driving through NW fell in love with the area.

The whole North Wales coast is linked to the trains to Manchester (may need to change at Chester or is it Crewe), we used to go and visit family in Manchester often.
Train stations all along on the way to the ferry in Holyhead to get to Ireland.
Small lines off the main one go to Llandudno and up the Conwy Valley to Llanrwst and Blaenau Ffestiniog. I look in the areas around Conwy.

Could you not move to somewhere in Wales with a school which would suit your dd?

quite understand why you would love the area; but you can't get to Manchester in an hour.

And to be honest, if you could it would be an awful lot more expensive!

I live in North Wales Morethan. In the mountains, looking out over the sea. I love it. Welsh speaking area/Welsh schools though so that would need to be taken into consideration if you moved into the similar Welsh speaking areas. Im an hour from Llandudno towards Porthmadog. Llandudno and Colwyn Bay would be ideal as it is not so Welsh speaking but still beautiful.

Unfortunately, moving schools isn't possible. it took her two auditions to be accepted, it's a specialist school that she'll attend until 18.

I love N.Wales it's so beautiful. The countryside and mountains, ah I know I would love it.
Although I love the sea it wouldn't be a deciding factor in the choice of area, but lovely views, mountains etc would be.

At present we are East Lancs/ Greater Manchester, and the prices seem the same or a bit cheaper in Wales.
