Slugs, slugs and more slugs

We keep finding the odd slug in our kitchen and slug trails on the mats. Got in late Saturday night and there were four of them having a full on disco on the kitchen floor.

How the frick do we deal with this? I've told them not to come back and shouted swearwords under the units but they keep coming.

Salt around the perimeter of the house or perimeter of the kitchen?

Is it seasonal? Will they all be gone by autumn or will there be more coming in out of the cold?

They make me

you can put slug pellets under the kitchen units and appliances where they will be out of reach of inquisitive kittens and toddlers.

However slugs need damp. Perhaps you have cracks in the wall below DPC, or the outside ground level has been raised up, or perhaps (esp. a kitchen) you have a plumbing leak. Have a very good look and sniff.

Also look for woodlice which eat damp and rotting wood (not sound wood) and are a sign of damp.

If they are coming in from outside (they like old damp walls) scatter pellets thinly, and keep doing it after rain. It takes a few weeks for the population to drop, then you only need to scatter along the boundary.

When we moved in (couple of months ago) we found the dishwasher had leaked and the kitchen floorboards were sodden. They've dried out now but that could explain that - they seem to be coming from that exact area. Will get some pellets...

The outside level is also currently above the DPC - we need a channel digging. You know PigletJohn.

We had similar for a year or so, going into the kitchen in the evening or middle of the night was revolting. The sealant had gone behind the sink and when we sorted any leaks and resealed everything, they vanished. We're in a first floor flat too, couldn't believe they bothered making the trip. Foul enough creatures in the garden, but on the kitchen counters? Uurrrghhh. Good luck!

We used to have this. They were so revolting, not least because they were yellowy-green rather than the usual brown/black! If you have a garden, get a(nother) pond and make it frog-friendly. Each frog eats thousands of frogs a year, or so I've heard! The more frogs came to our garden, the fewer slugs we had in the house.

I meant: Each frog eats thousands of slugs! They're not cannibals...

I'd love a pond but we've no room. It's a shame the rats that live under our decking don't keep the slugs at bay....
