Help me choose our new kitchen!

I am torn between an oak shaker door kitchen or high gloss cream units, please help me decide! For weeks I have been set on the oak one, but having spoken to several kitchen designers it seems that high gloss is the way to go. They said most people choose high gloss now, it looks sleek and modern. However, I'm a slattern and worried that the high gloss would show up every mark and fingerprint. Also the inside of the oak units are wood which I believe will be harder wearing in the long run than the white innards of a gloss one.

It's going to be a living/kitchen so we will be looking at it all the time! I'm wondering if the sleeker modern look may be better and give the "wow" factor. Also that oak may make the room darker. Aaaaaarrrggghhhh! Help me decide please!

Ooh I'm planning a new kitchen too!

I prefer the gloss to the wood in your picture, OP.

I started off by not liking or wanting gloss, but have really come round to it since I started looking. There's a really really lovely gloss kitchen in John Lewis which I've been perving I think white gloss is a bit clinical and cold looking though, cream much nicer.

A friend has a gloss kitchen and she says it's very easy to keep clean - a quick wipe with a baby wipe does the trick apparently.

I can't picture what will go together or look good in terms of gloss/matt, colour of units with splashbacks, worktop and floor.

I've got Amtico slate tile on the floor and want orange splashback. No tiles. Pale colours for doors and worktop as it's a small kitchen.

Love that pale green kitchen, Noddy

Under stairs kitchen storage can be so versatile do not see that as a hindrance. www.houzz.co.uk/under-stairs-kitchen-storage

Some inspiration here for me. www.wrenkitchens.com/kitchens/greens

We have just ordered our new kitchen (first and last time we'll do this so wanted it perfect!). We've gone for sage green in frame shaker cabinets, I'm not a fan of gloss but also the pine units to me look very dated. We could paint the doors if we want a change a few years down the line.
We picked bianco antique granite with upstands so no wall tiles and tumbled limestone floor tiles. We have an old property (1870) so modern would look odd to me.

Sounds gorgeous, Boston

Marmitelover55 · 03/05/2015 16:57

We went for painted MDF in vanilla with light granite worktops (ivory fantady), granite upstands, wooden floor and a very bright splashback. I personally can't stand black granite as it just dominates and absorbs the light. This is our end result: www.houzz.co.uk/projects/787449/open-plan-extension-with-office-corner

measles64 · 03/05/2015 17:48

We too are going for sage green a restful matt colour imo. If I had a tenner for every friend who is fed up with their black granite.

Bostonpj · 03/05/2015 18:21

Thanks JulesJules! Its the biggest most expensive thing I've done apart from buying the house and was really quite stressful! Now we're decided on everything I just want it finished. Thee builder isn't starting until end of June Sad

Bostonpj · 03/05/2015 18:23

Black looks good in a shiny gloss kitchen I think, so long as I don't need to clean it! But green is definitely my colour - half the house is green Grin

Jointheclub1 · 03/05/2015 19:32

We wound definitely get lighter colour worktops if we went for the oak. Want the room to be as bright as possible! However I'm loving sage green! More confusion Grin

At the end of the day its a personal choice, for me I don't like wood, I think it looks out dated and boring.. I went to wrens as I wanted to see what my new kitchen would look like, once the extension is up and needed a price... What I thought I wanted was the white gloss, white quartz tops and have a splash of colour here and there with my accessories, but then I changed my mind, i picked out a cappuccino handless gloss units and then a chocolate sparkle granite counter tops, i wanted it to feel warm and inviting and just flow better with the rest of my house deco.... I did look the creams but looked like a very light yellow like someone has been smoking in the kitchens for years...

Higgle have a look at DIY Kitchens for painted/matt handleless units - it was one of the only places I could find that did them. The downside is that the don't offer a design or fitting service, so you either need to design it yourself or pay an independent designer to do it for you; and either need to fit yourself or get a builder to fit for you. But on the positive side they do seem to be quite cost competitive. Our units are being delivered on Wed .

anchovytoast · 04/05/2015 00:07

Oh gosh, marmitelover, I bookmarked your photos on Houzz a few weeks ago as an example of what I might do with my kitchen. Looks really good.

Higgle · 04/05/2015 09:57

Love your kitchen, marmitelover. Your architect has worked wonders on lots of Bristol houses, lots of inspiration there. Interestingly, looking through the portfolio the main common factors are a range cooker, light floors ( a bit worried the one I have chosen is dark) lovely light fittings and some beautiful artwork on display. I can also see that in most houses there is still quite a lot of countertop clutter, so maybe it is unrealistic to get rid of it all and poncetastic accessories is the way forward.

JulesJules · 04/05/2015 10:47

Gorgeous kitchen, Marmite! Agree with you about black granite, I want something very pale too.

Marmitelover55 · 04/05/2015 13:22

Thank you Blush We are very happy with the result Smile

Ginmakesmecry · 04/05/2015 18:30

Higgle MKM have a range of matt handless/incorporated handle kitchens

lolalotta · 04/05/2015 21:55

Deb, your words described perfectly how I want my new kitchen to look! I bought a Victorian (non-twirly quite utilitarian) pine glazed dresser on the weekend for £350.00 which I hope is going to work in nicely with the look I'm going for.... Grin

lolalotta · 04/05/2015 21:56

We're in a 1930s house too. I've been going mad on Pinterest pinning the mismatched look I'm after. I want free standing too.

measles64 · 04/05/2015 22:40

A couple of friends, very talented, arty have used Annie Sloan paints to pull the mismatch look together and both have incredible kitchens.
