Moving into a new property - not bothering with gas?

Hello

I bought a house on Friday. It is charming, and basically unchanged from about 1950. That includes the gas lights and cooker!

I don't want to use these, and bearing in mind I have a big woodburning stove, think I don't have to have a gas supply.

Is it possible to be removed from the gas network altogether? I don't want to pay for a service I don't use.

you are going to cook on the stove too? OK. Presumably lighting will be electric.

you can have all the points capped off (by a gas safe person) - that means you won't use any gas. No need to dig up pipes.

I have an induction hob. I think they're safer than gas cookers, and quite a bit cheaper to run.

I have looked into it. Proper disconnection would be more than £1000 all in. Shock

I'm just going to switch it off myself, and switch to a tariff without a standing charge.

Does the gas boiler heat the hot water?

obviously if you don't use the gas items, you don't use any gas. Hope you can find a unit-only tariff.

do make sure everything is safe - fit a CO detector and have a good sniff for leaks. I'd be very concerned about gas appliances untouched in 60 years.

specialsubject, it will be fine. The gas will be switched off at the meter. I will box in the meter, and forget it exists until I can afford a gas boiler. The cooker will be a piece of sculpture.

Yes, VivaLeBeaver I have no gas boiler. It's immersion element only, and what I can heat on a stovetop.

Before living in this house, I spent many years on a boat. That didn't have gas either, and I did most of my cooking on the stove from October-Aprilish. Living at this new house is luxury!

aha. In that case, no worries. Once you've got your gas boiler your bills will go down, although of course you have to pay for the system first.

good luck in your new home!

Just remember to leave the required access and air flow around the meter as they'll still need to do meter readings. Smile
