Downstairs toilet or dishwasher, what's more useful?

We are in a small house and there is a tiny room downstairs that could be turned into a downstairs loo potentially, or we could move the washing machine in there and get a dishwasher in the space it creates in the kitchen.....
Which do you think would be more useful?....we have two smallish children...

Downstairs loo with high level shelves to store excess stuff from the kitchen - then dishwasher in the kitchen.

If I had to chose I would do dishwasher though. Use my dishwasher daily. The frequency that two people are on the loo at the same time is not as frequent (especially when DCs are at school). It may only be bedtime/morning when two loos are useful - but then no-one wants to go downstairs to use the loo and you can simply use a queuing routine (which you probably already use).

DH agrees without a shadow of doubt - dishwasher.

Four people and one loo? Loo wins no question

May09Bump · 28/04/2015 10:12

Dishwasher - I cried when mine broke. Time wise - I think i would spend more time hand washing dishes than everyone going upstairs to the toilet.

caker · 28/04/2015 11:24

Definitely loo!

AnnPerkins · 28/04/2015 11:32

I have a downstairs toilet and no dishwasher and I wouldn't swap.

If guests had to go upstairs to use the toilet I'd have to hoover the stairs and tidy the bedrooms more often.

We got rid of our tumble dryer because we never used it.

sanquhar · 28/04/2015 11:41

we ripped out our downstairs loo and turned it into a utility room. extra bogs are overrated, unless you are the Duggars.

we are a family of 4 too and the dishwasher really did save our sanity.

BertieBotts · 28/04/2015 12:23

You can empty a potty in a sink, or outside if worried about wee splashes, why would you trail upstairs?

GoblinLittleOwl · 28/04/2015 12:24

Dishwasher; you already have a loo.

Yokohamajojo · 28/04/2015 12:26

Definitely downstairs loo! we only have one upstairs and it's starting to drive me nuts! DS are now 6 and 8 and it's getting worse....

RaphaellaTheSpanishWaterDog · 28/04/2015 13:22

Downstairs loo definitely!

We were spoilt by previously having a house with four loos - between three of us - then moved to a house with only one. It was a right pita if you'll excuse the pun and we made fitting a second loo one of the first things we did.

I would miss a dishwasher too - in fact, that said our new house has a broken dishwasher (inherited from PO) and we've managed without one since moving in mid Dec as we'll replace it as part of the kitchen refurb during the Summer, so maybe I don't miss it that much......

We're back to three loos in this house though - one on each of the three main floors!

Downstairs toilet anytime as far as I'm concerned. DP gets terribly annoyed every time workmen, visitors, strangers, etc come to the house and ask to use the toilet - and for some reason they always do. What good is a dishwasher? They don't wash clean anyway. Surely you're not starting the dishwasher to wash just a few plates each time you have a quick lunch or something? Actually I have both loo and dishwasher downstairs. I've never used the latter. Am trying to get rid of it as it is just taking up space sitting there doing nothing.

HellKitty · 28/04/2015 14:24

Downstairs loo.
I went from a house with both, to one with no downstairs loo but a dishwasher, same again then back to both. Loo wins everytime. Especially when the DCs are teens and obsess about their face and hair. I'd have to wait for them and DP to go to work/school before I could pencil in a wee for myself.

RedRugNoniMouldiesEtc · 28/04/2015 14:27

I live in a teeny house with 4 teenagers and one bathroom with toilet. if someone said I could have an extra toilet but had to lose the dishwasher I'd run screaming tbh. No one needs to be in the bathroom long and they soon learn not to hog when they are the ones hopping about on the outside! I don't actually understand the obsession with extra bathrooms/toilets. 6 of us share 1 and I don't think there's ever been a row. Everyone does the "I'm getting a bath if you need the toilet first " check and hey presto, happy sharing.

A dishwasher makes everyones life easier - teens are far happier loading the dishwasher than doing a load of pots!

RedRugNoniMouldiesEtc · 28/04/2015 14:28

Oh and hair /make up etc is easily sorted by fitting a decent mirror in the bedroom and telling them to use it Grin

Woozlebear · 28/04/2015 14:30

Dishwasher!!! Why are some people so obsessed with downstairs loos? Climbing a flight of stairs won't kill you, and how many people are all going to be constantly weeing/pooing at the same time and unable to wait for a minute?

HellKitty · 28/04/2015 14:31

Redrug - 'the lights better, it looks different, I'm only going to be a minute...' Heard them all Grin

villainousbroodmare · 28/04/2015 14:37

For me, a dishwasher.

MooseyMoo · 28/04/2015 14:42

Downstairs loo. My DM had a rule of wee downstairs, poos upstairs. We use the downstairs toilet all the time and visitors use it as well. Also useful if you are ill in the night and do not want to wake everybody.

Zinxie · 28/04/2015 14:42

Really really don't at all like tiny downstairs loos in close proximity to kitchen and living space. Yuck.

Dishwasher keeps your kitchen looking better all day, if you load all cups and plates etc into it as they are finished with, and switch it on late pm.
So, definitely dishwasher!

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 28/04/2015 14:46

I'm so pleased to see I'm not alone with my failure to understand this obsession with loads of loos!

HellKitty · 28/04/2015 14:47

I am a slovenly slut though so would rather visitors use the downstairs one Grin

49again · 28/04/2015 14:53

Dishwasher no question. BUT can you have both ie put up a wall in the room to make a small utility area for the dishwasher/washing machine and a separate small loo and sink. I have just done this and it works well.

itsveryyou · 28/04/2015 14:56

We have a downstairs loo which I am really keen to get rid of as it's right next to the front door - and honestly, nothing says 'welcome!' more than a boy-filled bog Grin. But other people say the downstairs loo is a 'selling feature' - really not sure about that one. The house also has an upstairs family bathroom and en suite - surely two is enough in a small house?!

museumum · 28/04/2015 14:57

dishwasher. no doubt. saves so much time, allows you to wash really hot. saves so much time, just no question.

Honsandrevels · 28/04/2015 15:07

Could you fit the washing machine in the bathroom? Our friends have both the washer and dryer stacked in their bathroom. When we moved we moved the washing machine to the cellar to allow us to have a dishwasher. I was desperate for one. I love it!

We don't have a downstairs loo but do have one outside which is useful for emergencies.
