I would like cotton velvet in a plain colour for pencil pleat floor length lined (blackout) curtains (100 inch by 108 inch drop)

There is a really good material shop near me (London SE) but it doesn't seem to do plain velvets

I can probably find a local crafty person to make them up, unless it is easy on my old Singer....?

(I struck gold on gumtree for HUGE velvet curtains for downstairs but am struggling to get the amount needed for upstairs in a paler colour. Most vintage velvet curtains seem to go to 90 inch drop)

I buy all my curtain fabric off eBay. There are loads of people selling decent stuff and most of them will send samples too if you're worried about quality or colour. You can also get nice designer fabrics for about half the RRP.

If you can travel a bit, Goldhawk Road (Shepherd's Bush) is an Aladdin's cave of fabrics and has around 20 shops selling all types. You'll definitely get some decent velvet there. I used to spend hours browsing when I lived over that way!

Try Terrysfabrics.co.uk, they are used by one of the TV house programmes. I got some very reasonably priced lining fabric from them and would use again.

John Lewis?

They will send out sample swatches free of charge.

Agree with Terrys Fabric. Delivery was super quick. Might even have been next day and I didn't pay for an express delivery

You would save a lot of money making them yourself if you have done a bit of sewing. Old Singer would be fine. Curtains are not difficult to make in concept, just very large so the measuring and cutting out is a bit of an undertaking. Helps to have a large floor area and a big table to work on.

The Merrick and Day books are good for instructions (and their website for linings, header tape etc).
