Questions for anyway with IKEA Metod kitchens

We have chosen our layout and style. I'm now very sadly working out where everything will go by using a spreadsheet . I love the flexibility, but want to ensure maximum use of space. Essentially I'm asking someone to get their tape measure out!

Am getting an 80cm wide drawer for pans, though I guess the width is irrelevant. Externally this will have 2 * 20cm high drawers and a 40cm drawer. See page 6/7, the middle layout that is helpfully spread across two pages.

1.The top 20cm drawer will have utensils. I was planning on putting two low drawers in here (ie both 10cms) but wondered how much height I actually get in each. Would say a ladle fit in a 10cm drawer - what's the real internal measurement (height) of each. I notice that IKEA give the height as 7.8cms but presume that's the drawer, not the clearance once fitted.

  1. Same question but for the 40cm high drawer. Making this 2 20cms (2 medium in IKEA speak) internally would be better as I would prefer not to stack my pans if possible. If that doesn't get me enough clearance, I could just add a low drawer in the big bottom drawer for pan lids (as per the brochure link above), and stack the pans in the main drawer. Again per IKEA the height of the internal drawer is 14.5cm. A kind mumsnetter here says the total internal height is 36cms but not sure how much space that would leave if you fitted the two drawers in the same space. Is the lower part then going to have 36-14.5 clearance? I'd imagine the split is more even than that.
  1. Middle drawer will be a 20cm but from the thread linked above that's 17cms?
  1. Does a refillable clingfilm dispenser fit in a 10cm high drawer? (ie the "low" drawer). Probably answered by 1 above though!
  1. If I play safe and don't include the secondary internal drawers, are they easy to fit afterwards?

Think that's all I had for now ;). I have tons of cupboards/drawers so a good bit of flexibility, but don't want to kick myself that I could have shuffled things around for a much more user friendly layout.

Thanks for any help. I was in IKEA with the tape measure at the weekend but forgot to check these things.

Grr typo in title. Should be anyone obviously.

I can possibly answer a couple of bits.

The secondary internal drawers are easy to fit afterwards. I have fitted some Metod drawers in our Faktum Ikea kitchen which requires a little more work. In the Metod it doesn't require anything more than a screwdriver as the holes for the drawer runners are pre-drilled.

The 10cm height metod drawer if fitted immediately below something else will comfortably contain cling film, baking paper etc. I don't know what size a refillable cling film dispenser is but would suspect it is too big as there is not much clearance. Remember that the total height of the drawer includes the bottom panel which is about 1cm thick, i.e. total height of drawer is not all useable space.

ohh I'm the kind mumsnetter Grin
I have one 10cm drawer and the internal measurements Ikea are correct. I can't keep a lot in it but I'll take a picture and post shortly.

MuddyWellyNelly · 21/04/2015 21:04

Thanks both.

ToBee the fact that I can easily add more afterwards does help things significantly. Means a bit more trial and error is possible. My refillable clingfilm thing is 6cm - so not much bigger than a normal box. Sounds like I might just manage to fit it in.

Mrsladybirdface you are indeed Grin. What do you mean by the IKEA internal measurements being correct? Do you mean the 7.8cm? My confusion is that it is the depth of the front of the drawer, but I don't know if that then goes all the way to the top of the cabinet (assuming it's the top drawer); and then if fitted within a 20 cm drawer, how much headroom do I have below it.

I might have to get back to IKEA, ladle in hand. My ladle and tattie masher are the problem items. Both are going to be around 9cms when laid flat. It doesn't sound like I'd fit either in the tiny drawers.

Sorry read it wrong! I have 10 cm drawers in 20th drawers. I can't fit a ladle! But they can fit all other utensils. the depth is about 7.8cms between the two drawers.

Haha - thanks for not only testing it for me, but providing photographic evidence Grin. It's a bit annoying as everything else would fit. I might have to put the ladle elsewhere!

I also spy what looks like schwartz spice jars in the spice tray? Fancy counting how many you can get front to back Wink. ie up each column. I think I can get 6 columns (3 racks) in a 40cm drawer.

I am really taking this to extremes I fear. I've been measuring drinks bottles and travel mugs and tupperware lids. I'm now thinking what we might need in future years (I'm pregnant with DC1) so imagining where plastic cups will live....

4 in each column so 24 for you. If you get their lighting it comes with integrated hooks to hang utensils from.

I'll pm you my piniterest board with pics of my kitchen onSmile

Thank you. I shall go to bed now and try not to stay awake imagining the many storage combinations I could have...
