Maximum Height For Microwave

Part of my original layout was:
large (freezer) unit, large (larder) unit, midi (oven) unit, midi (microwave) unit, standard unit.

The intention had been to put my double oven in the first midi units and my microwave in the other. However, due to an alterations in the design I now have to move my TV and the only place it can really go is in the last two units I've mentioned.

That means, of course, that the midi unit I had intended to use for the microwave must now become a standard size unit. So I now have
large unit, large unit, midi unit, standard unit, standard unit. (the two standard units been used for the TV)

One possibility I'm looking at is to make the midi (oven) unit into a large unit and house both my double oven and my microwave there but I'm wondering if this would be two high/unsafe for the placing of a microwave.

The attached image will give you an idea as to what I'm talking about: would a micro above the oven be to high up. I'm about 5'10"

Many thanks for your views

Ideal height for a micro or other heat generating appliance is no higher than your shoulder - as we loose strength in our arms if we lift higher than shoulder height - so taking something hot and heavy out of an appliance that's too high is dangerous .

We have one like that and I struggle to reach it safely but I am short (5'2)

We had a double oven and microwave in a single unit like that - compared to your picture the lower cupboard/drawer was smaller so the oven was lower, and we had a small space above the microwave (could have been a small cupboard but was boxed in). It was a little bit on the high side - was OK for me but I am tall, think someone 5ft might have struggled. I normally only use microwave for reheating tea, microwave meals etc so nothing hard to lift but I guess the risk of tipping scalding hot microwave curry all over yourself has to be considered!

Oh and I'm currently planning a new kitchen and will probably do the same again as simply no other space for alternative.

We have that exact layout at the moment and while the microwave is absolutely fine to reach into for food in and out, it's almost impossible to clean. I'm also 5'10" and with the microwave door down (fold flat type), there's no way I can reach in far enough to get to the back/top to wipe around. So it could work, but only with a sideways opening one.

Two posibilities had occured to me:

  1. Drop the double oven down a little and that would give you that extra bit of room or
  2. Put the micro below the main oven. Yes that would mean bending down but like Plateofcrumbs I wil only be using it for defrosting and general rewarming, not for cooking.

Definitely number 1 - with no. 2 you basically end up with a floor level microwave which is just daft*, or else you have to raise the height of your double oven.

*yes I know you can have ovens at floor level but in that case only the door is at floor level, the controls would be at hip height. Bending down to set the timer on the microwave would be stupid.
