Piglet John ! Help! (toilet / drain / block)

Help... !

Our downstairs toilet isn't flushing properly. It started the night before last- when you flush it it was going to a funny level and making the sink next to it gurgle. We poured some water down both and did the whole bleach / plunge etc Google everything and still being funny.

If you flush the upstairs toilet it's not flushing properly either. Seems to fill really high and take ages to go down. The downstairs one is doing the same or it seems to suck so far back there's hardly any water left.

I've had the lid off the downstairs one and it's filling okay. The sink is still making gurgling noises when you flush the toilet. It seems there is water just standing in the pipes.

Any ideas? I'm going to have to ring someone aren't I. .. plumber or dyno rod people?

Any help appreciated.

I'm not a plumber, but the same thing happened with our downstairs loo shortly after we moved into our current house.

We called Dynarod and it turned out the drain was blocked under the road outside the house where our drain fed into it (if that's the right terminology!).

The drain guy managed to clear it out. The smell was horrendous.

have you got any "man-hole" covers?

Fairylea · 17/04/2015 20:03

Thanks for the replies. Hmmm there isn't a bad smell anywhere oddly enough but then I think we have put enough bleach down to kill the entire ocean wildlife population Blush

We do have a man hole type cover in the garden away from the house. We've lifted it up and can see a pipe with 2 others running into it. Dh has looked into it while I've flushed the toilets and run the taps and he said its just empty with a small trickle. ....!

so it is between the WC and that manhole. If you have two bathrooms, or a separate kitchen drain, it would account for the two pipes,

Possibly if you were to poke rods towards the house you might dislodge it.

However (depending on age) it might be for the rainwater, and unconnected with the foul.

The sooner you get it fixed the better, because the accumulation will be getting worse.

Okay thank you. It's getting a bit dark now so I will try and have another go with the manhole pipes and if no luck I will ring dyno rod tomorrow and book them in. ... more money down the drain (literally). Damn.

Thanks for the help.

you could try your local water company. In your case it is unlikely to be a free repair as it appears to be within your property, but they have the people and equipment so they might offer a price.

Fairylea · 17/04/2015 20:44

That's an idea. I will ring them tomorrow.

Seems frustrating I might end up having to pay out for something that might not even be our fault....

sorry, I should have clarified - there was no smell Inside the house. The smell when the drain guy opened up the drain cover in the garden was beyond belief....

Hooe you get it sorted
