My daughter (25)who has recently started work at St Mary's Hospital Manchester wants to buy a property asap. Ideally a two bedroomed flat , in a safe area (bearing in mind she works late at night and early morning ) within a30-40min walk of work (but also near bus routes into the city)

Does anyone know/live in this area ?

There are quite a few Manchester ladies on MN who will be able to help. Its not a "bad" area but its not great. I certainly would be slightly concerned that my 25 yr old daughter was contemplating 40 min walk at night on here own (as I would be in any major city centre to be honest). So the point of my post was to perhaps not set her location on being within a 40 min walk (although that's fine in the day) - she wants to be sure she finds somewhere with a reliable night bus service or where other staff from St Marys live so she's likely to be travelling in with others.

Avoid. It's certainly not as bad as it was before they demolished the crescents, but she'd be stupid to consider walking home late at night. It's pretty rough.

I'd stick with withington/fallowfield/didsbury corridor. Easy transport by bus, or have a look at the Piccadilly/airport train line.

When I was young and looking at property I got a public transport map, and focussed on areas with good bus and train service, especially late at night. Worked well.

Manchester's not too bad for cycling either, which makes things easier.

MMU I have recently moved into Hulme and made a link between Oxford Road and Hulme which I imagine will become increasingly busy and therefore safer to walk. But at night, I wouldn't do it and at the moment Hulme still doesn't have a good reputation.

As others have said, further down wilmslow Road on the bus route would probably be better....or maybe around the far side of Hathersage Road.

Yes she's been in Manchester 6 years as a student and lived in Fallowfield . But doesnt really want to live in student area . She lives in rented flat 3 mins from Picadilly at the moment and walks home to there ..
Don't think she can afford Didsbury
Friend lives in Walley Range Again she thinks its probably too expensive
Thanks, will search for earlier thread

Grove village may be worth looking at in Ardwick about a 15-20 minute walk from St. Mary's. New build flats and houses. Meet someone that had lived there for a couple of years and likes it. www.gleeson-homes.co.uk/new-homes/north-west/grove-village

There are benefits to student areas though, lots of people around, especially at night. If she decides to change job, she can easily rent out her flat if necessary.

Our main concern is her safety to be honest. And I know Manchester's reputation is undeserved and its no worse than any other major city but it still makes us a bit uneasy .

Yes we think maybe she should stretch herself (with our help) and go for Didsbury
