Bathroom - when to splurge and when to save?

I'm redoing our en suite bathroom am looking for a high end finish on a budget. What's worth splurging on and where should I save? I need a new shower (enclosure, tray, tiles), new bath, new vanity tops, sinks, taps, floor tiles, wall paint...

My bathroom and shower room refit starts next week, amd we're splurging on a big Carronite bath (800x1800) and waterfall power showers.
Saving on the sink& basin in the ensuite by recycling the ones from the bathroom, and also on the cabinets for the bathroom by a relative having a Howdens trade account. Also saving a bit on the wet wall we're using for the entire room by re-using what we already have.
Taps we seem to have gone for mid price range, and we're just putting Lino on the floor which has only cost £40

We've just begun and figured taps are on/off a lot, bath/shower gets in/out a lot so have splurged a bit more on those. Wet wall/fan will protect from future mould I pray so spent on those too . Sink and toilet not so much. I fancy a heated mirror but am waiting to see how effective the fan is before deciding I neeeed one
It soon adds up still though!

I think get the best taps you can afford as good ones look and feel much nicer that cheap ones and can make the rest of the room look classy.

I have to agree, spend more money on the taps, bath/shower, and decent fan. I have yet to see a toilet or sink that has made me go "wow" or be impressed, but taps and bath/shower? Definitely. Floor tiles? Hmm... just nice, but in our bathroom, there's a mat outside the bath and a mat by the toilet, so depending on the size of the room, how much of them are you going to see? Grin Vanity tops, I'd say go with something neutral or that just fits in with the look you want well, and leave it at that. I honestly don't notice much of that unless it's awful. (sorry, if that's not too helpful!)

Thanks all, will splurge on taps and fittings. We have a huge en suite (we live in Texas) with 2 vanity tops, each 5 feet long with one sink so you see them a lot..... Floor is huge too, room is about 20x10ft.......

Trying to find a balance between my taste (minimalist) and Texas taste (marble and gold) so that I can live with it without making the house un sellable in the future....... Thinking brushed nickel, grey walls, streamlined and white barely there marble effect surfaces.....

Well, I officially hate you, as my bathroom is the side of a postage stamp. Envy

Ah, I'll cling to that thought when I get that far. I've got to do the dining room first. Already did the downstairs toilet - that's even SMALLER than a postage stamp, so was pretty quick. Grin
