Bishopthorpe anyone?

Moving to York and really liked Bishopthorpe village. Hoping for activities for small children and friendly community. Bit worried it's coloured low risk blue on flood maps (1% to 0.1%) but property we've seen has never flooded. If the local school is full, would get a place at Nayburn which I'm told is lovely.

Lovely looking village but I would check out the flood risk very thoroughly. I don't live that close but remember the Bishop's Palace flooding in the last couple of years.

Thanks. I've checked the Environment Agency maps and whole of Bishopthorpe is deemed low risk. Suppose I need someone who knows village well and could tell me which streets are more vulnerable in reality. My parents say surely whole of village isn't worrying about it. .but then they live in 0% risk area!

Most of York is low risk. It's all fairly low lying and has two rivers running through it. Areas like Dringhouses and Woodthorpe are also at risk because of the clay ponds. I've lived here nearly 40 years and I only remember the palace flooding once.

I have lived in York for 10 years. Bishopthorpe is a nice village, and good for families, convenient for both town and commuting out. The village school has a very good reputation, but is very popular also so may be hard to get in. If it is full, Copmanthorpe school is another option (next village) and that school has good Ofsted and not oversubscribed. Also Knavesmire School has very good reputation, but may be over subscribed. Appleton Roebuck may be another option. Naburn looks close on a map, but it isn't - you have the small matter of a river to cross, so actually it is a bit of a drive.

As for flooding, I have known Bishopthorpe flood twice I think since living here. And that only affects some parts of the village - basically right next to the river. The vast majority of it is fine, so I wouldn't worry about that. Naburn on the other hand does flood regularly and gets cut off. It is lovely but this is a serious issue and I would avoid personally.
