water underfloor heating

We are in the midst of a kitchen diner extension, we have had a quote for supply and fitting of underfloor heating which seems very expensive. Does anyone have experience of this being fitted? The area will be approx 30m2 and will be laid on the newly laid floor so no ripping up of existing flooring. Also, the plumber that quoted was already going to be fitting a couple of radiators which was included in our extension quote.

If anyone can help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Why on earth do you need radiators and underfloor heating? The whole point if underfloor is no radiators.
What do you mean that it will be laid onto newly laid floor? On top of concrete and tiled over?

Make sure you get good advice and plan early enough to get everything done in the right order. Our UFH pipework was laid on top of 110mm foil backed celotex insulation and once the pipework was in place, over that was about 60/70mm of liquid screed. The screed then takes approx 1 day per mm to fully dry before covering with tiles/flooring etc.

Thanks Lucypie, that is what we were told would happen. Threequartersempty, I wasn't clear in my post, what I meant was that in the original quote for all building work, included was the plumbing work and fitting of radiators. We have since talked about underfloor heating so obviously some of the labour involved with this would be absorbed by the original quote for the plumbing work. We obviously don't want radiators as well!

Looking at the price of the actual heating system, the overall quote seems very high. Is it very difficult or time consuming to lay? We are woefully experienced in this area!!

The parts would cost about a thousand pounds extra, plus the fitting cost.

You have not given us any clues what the quote is.

munchkinmaster · 07/04/2015 01:40

I'm getting 30m2 in my extension. Keen to hear your cost

munchkinmaster · 07/04/2015 01:47

Anyway, chat with builder etc was to reduce the underfloor heating to get build cost down so I suppose must be pricey

PigletJohn · 07/04/2015 01:47

You spoke of the heating going on the newly laid floor. However the floor goes on the UFH.

Have they already started building?

UptobedNOW · 07/04/2015 03:33

Sorry, UFH will go under the newly laid floor. I just meant that there would be no labour costs involved with taking up an existing floor etc. Quote is for £2800.

We've just paid a little over £2k for 50m2 but it's the retro fit water system on top of insulated panels.

Our plumber did price up the screed type initially in error and it was a third of the cost - sadly we couldn't go that route

Could you approach a couple of companies to quote for you then you can compare with your plumbers pricing?

UptobedNOW · 07/04/2015 07:39

The plumber that has quoted is the one doing the rest of the plumbing work as he is the one that the building contractors have got in. But you are right, we will have to get some other quotes and also breakdown of his quote.

I'll let you know my price when I get my breakdown

UptobedNOW · 07/04/2015 11:17

Will be interesting to see the comparison. I think the quote is too much. I have looked at systems to buy and you can get a top range one which cover 30m2 for £910 which includes everything you need. That makes the labour costs excessive to say the least...

Saying that though, I know nothing about the installation of the system or if it is very time consuming.

Did you get it sorted OP? Am researching underfloor heating posts as am thinking about having it installed in our new extension...
