Lead Pipe...

We have just discovered that the water main pipe in our new house is lead. Does anybody know how much this is likely to cost to get removed and replaced?

Do you need to get it replaced / removed? the water board will come and advise.

Confusedhousehunter · 27/03/2015 15:56

I want to get it replaced as I have small children and it worries me.

We've just had quotes for this. All around the £2000 mark. That's for a run of about 25 meters and there's a minimum depth required.

Can you get a grant to cover some of the cost? Have a look on your council's website.

I'm only looking to replace a pipe of less than a metre.

£2000 seems like a lot! We were quoted from £500 - £1000. Have a look on my builder or rated people

where are you looking to replace from/to. Is the mains lead, in which case there is little point

Confusedhousehunter · 27/03/2015 20:12

I think it is just the main pipe in. It's under the cupboard under the stairs with the stopcock.

if you have hard water, no need as the scale protects you.

caroldecker · 28/03/2015 11:38

Sorry, I meant what material is taking to water from the road mains to your house - it is likely all lead, so will all need replacing if that's what you are worried about. here is some advice.

Don't need to remove the old one.

We had a leak recently, put in a new one by hiring a man and a digger to dig the trench and put the pipe in, and a plumber came along to do the stuff at each end. Off top of my head about £600 total.

Confusedhousehunter · 28/03/2015 19:41

I've no idea what type of pipes lead into the house ( no pun intended) but I thought the water board would replace those if we had high lead readings?

I'd want it removed as well, especially if you find you find Colonel Mustard in your ballroom.

Sorry...Grin

pinkje · 28/03/2015 20:34

The water board will do no more than replace the pipe to your boundary line. You would be responsible to pay and arrange the replacement on your side.

todayiamfat · 28/03/2015 20:40

My plumber man (new man!!) Says that my lead pipe coming off mains doesnt beed replaced. He said there is no point. He worked for severn trent and apparently there are still loads of lead pipes that all our water goes through.

He convinced me anyway Smile

waddleandtoddle · 28/03/2015 20:44

Ohh, and if you do decide on having the pipe removed take it to the scrappy yourself - it's worth a Bob or two.

321zerobaby · 30/03/2015 21:36

It will cost more to find and dig up the old lead pipe that you'll get for scrap. They would just lay a new one, old one would stay in place.
