Farrow and Ball Masonry paint - what primer?

I've been given some leftover farrow and ball masonry paint and was thinking of painting my new extension in it. It was rendered last March in a kind of tan render. Do I need to prime it? Do I need to use Farrow and Ball's primer? I'd rather do it cheaply, but I don't want to spen days painting the house and for it to need doing again in two years.

Anyone used it at all?

You don't need a primer with masonry paint. It's similar to using emulsion. You only need a primer if painting over bare wood/ metal.

How much paint have you got? It will take several coats to cover tan render. Not sure why would you want to paint over render that is only a few years old?

Thanks for responding - the rendered extension doesn't match the rest of the house, which is painted white - we have been planning to paint it white all along, just left it too late in the year last year. Homebase have an offer on, so I was going to buy some more, we absolutely don't have enough to do the extension! Was hoping to get away with two coats though, it's off white rather than PBW.

masonry paint is usually water-based and, like emulsion paint on bare plaster, you apply one or two mist coats with a brush, thinned with water so it soaks in.

If you have to buy some more, use the given paint as the mist and first coat, then your finish will all be in the new paint and you will not have a colour mismatch.

If you are covering existing paint, wash it first, and it does not need a mist coat.

Awesome. I'm going to have a test on a little wall first, to see how many coats to do. There's a spot of pebble dash to cover as well. That will not be fun.
