House near train line

We have seen a gorgeous house but it is backing onto a local commuter line. Trains go by at least 3-4 times per hour but are not particularly noisy and only a few carriages long (no freight or mainline). I don't think it would bother me but am concerned about resale. Does anyone have any advice/experience?

This post is very apt for us. We are a week away from exchanging on a house that backs onto a busy mainline that goes into London Bridge. It is also not far from a freight yard.
I have been to the house (only during the day) half a dozen times and stood in all the rooms to check out the noise and the only room you could hear them pass was in the back bedroom which has single glazing. As we will be in the front bedroom, this doesn't really bother us. We will get double glazing for the back bedroom eventually.
Lived in a flat that was on a busy B road and the traffic noises and buses used to drive me stir crazy.
It's something we can't really gauge until we live in the house unfortunately. We are getting a much bigger house and garden (60ft) then if we lived a few streets away. I still think we are getting a great house for the price.
We will worry about re-sale later.

The issue of rats on the other hand does worry me......I can't stand the things.
Fingers crossed.

I lived backing onto a railway line for 13 years and it didn't bother me at all. Occasionally I would feel the vibrations of trains going past at night when I was in bed, but I didn't hear the trains at all, after literally a couple of days. The railway meant that there was no-one backing onto us, and we felt secluded and un-overlooked. I could sunbathe naked in the garden if I wanted (which obviously I didn't Grin).

We never saw a single rat either, I've never heard of rats being a problem near a railway line. On the other hand, we had a lot of foxes in the garden, even in the daytime, and I got a bit fed up with them killing our chickens, particularly a lovely grey one who laid the prettiest blue eggs...

(Road traffic, on the other hand, does bother me, and I always said I'd rather have the railway than a main road. However, I now live on an A road in the country but it's right on the edge of a little market town so the traffic isn't that fast when it goes past our house - and if the house had been on a better road we couldn't have afforded it anyway.)

We have a railway line at the top of an embankment at the end of the garden. We barely notice the trains any more, although guests do notice as they aren't used to it.

When we bought the house, ours was one of five asking price offers after an open day. One was dismissed immediately for being in a chain, leaving four chain-free buyers. We increased our offer slightly and secured the house.

As pp have said, I much prefer the low, predictable sounds of trains to traffic noise. Traffic noise is irregular and always jarring, even before you consider sirens.

No safety concerns as the line is well fenced-off. We did reject another house (which is still unsold) for being three doors away from a level crossing; the traffic build-up was regular and severe, and we had safety concerns for the DC.
