self employed, 1st remortgage - any advice on brokers, process v welcome

Our first 2 year mortgage will be coming to an end in December.
DH and I think we need to get our ducks in a row as we didn't get a fabulous first deal.

Does anyone have any broker recommendations who do good work with self employed folk?

Also, re the valuation, is it worth getting your property to look it's best in the hope of getting a good LTV? Or are these done from an office somewhere and the mortgage company never sees the property?

We were wondering if an interest only mortgage that we could over pay as and when would be a better option for us due to our business being a limited company.
Any advice would be great as we've never gone through this process before and are a bit nervous about getting a good deal and choosing the right broker and product.

I'm self employed and after a recommendation on here I spoke to London & Country - so far they've been very good but I've not gone very far yet.

oolaroola · 23/03/2015 18:23

Thanks Last do you have a particular contact that you could recommend or did you just take pot luck?

Also, if you don't mind me asking, are you remortgaging and have you done it before? I'm nervous about all the tightened lending - last time we had to provide so much paperwork, and it took 2 months.

Talk to your current lender first- chances are they will offer you a product switch into a better product taking into account the index linked value of your house. They are unlikely to do any income assessment checks for this.

Shop around - we ended up getting the best rate through RBS

PrincessOfChina · 23/03/2015 18:39

We just did exactly as Ebayaholic suggests - got a great deal from our current lender without any of the hassle of paperwork etc.

Thanks everyone who has responded so far.

Does anyone have any info on the valuation thing in case our current lender offers a rubbish deal? Do they actually come and visit the property?

Yes, they do come and visit. I'll ask DH what's best he is quite a whizz with these things, also he is hot on offset mortgages because he is self employed.

Are you based in South East? My broker was fantastic.

GayByrne · 24/03/2015 11:57

London and country are amazing.

oolaroola · 24/03/2015 15:55

Miss no we're in the south west....

So that's two votes for London and Country.

Thanks MrsMarigold and everyone who is responding.

Does anyone have any opinion on interest only vs other products for those who run limited companies? Anyone know if they are totally impossible to get these days?

We got a mortgage when we thought it impossible (dh self employed and recent Ltd company), through contractor money (I think that was their name) and were very happy with the service. our remortgage is coming up soon too... :)

GatheringRequirements · 24/03/2015 18:53

ContractorMortgages.co.uk, PowerMortgage, ASFinancials , all of them are good

oolaroola · 25/03/2015 18:53

I've never heard of contractor mortgages, thanks, that sounds interesting and possibly v useful.
It would be so good to have a broker this time around who understands complicated ltd company structures and accounts etc
