Can you get a modern wood floor sanded and refinished?

We have what I think is solid oak flooring in the dining room and front room (it was put in by the previous owners). Over the years, it has got scratched and a bit dinged-up in places, and I was wondering if I could get it refinished?

We have a bit of a windfall coming soon, and are going to do some bits and pieces round the house, and I was wondering if this would be a worthwhile thing to get done.

I think so. It's one of the selling points of real wood over engineered, that you can sand and reseal.

Do you have a local independent wood flooring shop? I bet they could advise and possibly supply a fitter to do it.

That's a good idea - I shall hit yellow pages and google!

try to look at the end of a piece, perhaps in a doorway. Then you can verify if it is solid or engineered. Engineered is really a kind of plywood, so each layer has the grain going at right angles to the adjacent one(s). It can be sanded by varying amounts depending on how thick the top layer is.

If sanded, it might look quite pale afterwards. You can colour it with a wood dye such as Colron before using a varnish such as Diamond, or oil and wax if you prefer. It is easier to get an even colour that way, which is also easier to maintain or to match, than by using a coloured stain.

Thank you PigletJohn - that is very useful information - much appreciated!
